“Big Shot,” Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager, Chris Grant, was among the team celebrities to walk the runway with “little stars." The Cavaliers and Lake Erie Monsters’ annual “Big Shots and Little Stars” charity event benefits Flashes of Hope. The organization takes photos of children going through cancer treatment. The portraits manage to find “beauty and love and that spark” in a time when it’s hard to see, Ann Ramer said.
Sports celebrities, including Cavs center Anderson Varejao, weren't the only stars to walk the runway at the “Big Shots & Little Stars” fundraiser late last month. The event also featured children who have fought cancer. The fundraiser benefitted Flashes of Hope and the Children’s Tumor Foundation. According to the Flashes of Hope’s website, the event was expected to have raised more than $500,000.
Lauren had been diagnosed with cancer as a baby, her mother Ann Ramer said, and a recent routine screening had revealed a brain tumor just before last Christmas. A compassionate young lady, Lauren's greatest concern before the surgery was not for herself, but that she might not be able to donate her hair for wigs for other children with cancer. She was in and out of the hospital quickly—and she was able to take part in Kuttin' It for Kick-It earlier this year. Lauren's older brother, Alex, played a big part in the local Kick-It event for cancer research.
Lauren said the fundraiser was exciting, and she was glad to be paired up with Daniel Gibson—he made her laugh, she said, and they had a special handshake for the end of the runway. Ann Ramer added that he was so kind to Lauren throughout the event. (He even Tweeted a photo with Lauren!)
In addition to the “Little Stars” and the local celebrities, models wandered around the event dressed as sweet confections to fit the theme. Lauren said her favorite costume was a tiered cupcake dress. Here Lauren's walking the runway with Daniel Gibson.
