Community Should Express Opinions on School Levy

With a levy election on the way, the community needs to let their opinions be heard.

I didn’t think my second “Editor’s Notes” column would be so closely related to the first, but these things can’t be predicted.

The , an issue that should be important to everyone in the community, regardless of whether you have children in the schools. The levy helps raise money for the district and pay for its basic expenses. Schools in Ohio only get a portion of their money from the state and federal governments.

But levies also give the community a voice, a way to check the Board of Education and the district’s administration, to say whether the community feels its money is being well spent.

Again, I urge you to learn about your options and make your voice heard.

I won’t weigh in on how you should vote – it’s not my place as a journalist. But I will urge you to take advantage of opportunities to learn more and to express your point of view, whether that’s by , speaking during a public meeting or by casting your ballot in May.

If you plan to vote, I’d like to remind you to register – soon. The details can be found on the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections’ website; according to the website, potential voters need to be registered at least 30 days in advance of an election, which means that anyone in Brecksville who isn’t already registered only has about a week to change that in time for the May election.

As a reporter, I’ll cover both sides of the levy – what could happen if it doesn’t pass, and what could happen if it does. But the real story – the outcome of May’s election – is up to you.
