Frugal Family: Locally Grown Fruits and Veggies
Summer is the season for fresh and local produce.
One of the greatest things about the middle of summer in northeast Ohio is the season’s first taste of locally grown fruits and vegetables. Vine-ripened tomatoes, freshly picked zucchini and crisp green beans are just a few of the things that taste like summer. Here are some places nearby to find fresh, locally grown produce.
1. Cossel Farms, North Royalton
Deal: Owner John Cossel said that later this week they will be picking the first of this year's corn from their fields in North Royalton. This farm market also has other fruits and vegetables, as well as pumpkins in the fall and mulch, topsoil and firewood year-round.
Good Until: The market is open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. June 16 through October 31, 7 days a week.
2. Luther Farms
Deal: This family-owned farm sells produce and beef that they grow on their Richfield farm, as well as Amish-grown produce, canned goods and more. Frequent shoppers who buy 10 dozen ears of corn through the course of the season, get a dozen ears of corn free, according to their website; just ask for a punch card when checking out.
Good Until: The market is open daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. through the growing season.
Deal: This farmer’s market in the nearby Village of Richfield features fresh baked goods, jams and jellies, crafts and fresh produce. Check their website for more details.
Good Until: It's open from 3 p.m until 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 8 through October 12, 2011.
Deal: At Heinen's right now, you'll find Ohio-grown produce from dozens of different farmers. Heinen's website also provides interesting information about some of the farmers and farmers' favorite recipes.
Good Until: Just until the season ends; check the chart on their website to find out what's in-season currently.
Deal: Owner Dave Wingenfeld said that he waits until his tomatoes are ripe before he opens his farm market for the season. Located in nearby Valley View, this market will feature vine-ripened tomatoes, beans, squash, onions and beets.
Good Until: Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., starting the last weekend in July and running through the end of October
