Police Looking for Answers in Sunday's Fatal Car Crash

There was no alcohol found in the vehicle and no sign that cars were racing before the accident, said Assistant Law Director Sergio DiGeronimo.

The investigation is still underway, but Assistant Law Director Sergio DiGeronimo does not think that Brecksville resident Scott Lawrence Wayne was under the influence of alcohol at the time of his .

Wayne, an 18-year-old resident of Brecksville, died early Sunday morning when his vehicle hit the building on the corner of Chippewa and Brecksville roads.

The toxicology could take weeks to come back, DiGeronimo said, but there was no alcohol in the car. The police also looked into the possibility that people were racing on the road before the accident, but a surveillance tape from the across the street ruled that possibility out.

DiGeronimo estimated that the crash happened a little after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday based on the video and the call to police. Wayne was the only person involved in the accident.

His vehicle hit the building at 8903 Brecksville Rd. in Brecksville, known as the historic Red Brick Store. The building was still surrounded by caution tape as of Monday afternoon, and a crack was visible along the corner. DiGeronimo said police noticed there were no tire marks on the road near the scene of the accident.

DiGeronimo said he expects the official report to be finished by Tuesday.

It’s “just a terrible thing,” DiGeronimo said. Wayne had been working for the city as a seasonal member of its  this summer.
