Politicians, 'Joe the Plumber' Deliver Conservative Perspectives at Tea Party Rally

Roughly 3.500 people filed into Falls River Square to hear from politicians like Ohio Treasurer and U.S. Senate candidate Josh Mandel, U.S. Congressman Jim Renacci, "Joe the Plumber" and more.

Tea Party rallies are not for the faint of tongue.

On Sunday, roughly 3,500 conservative folks poured into Falls River Square to attend the "Rescue America Tax Day Rally" and express their views on everything from tax reform and deficit issues to domestic oil drilling and restricting the government's reach in free markets.

People waved signs, dressed in their best red, white and blue duds and cheered for each politician who hit the main stage. Several local right-wing groups set up tents and spread their messages as well.

"We're here to retire President Barack Obama, (Sen.) Sherrod Brown, (Rep.) Betty Sutton and others who are running this country into the ground," said Akron Tea Party member Tony Ziehler. "It's about changing the direction of this country and we want people old and young to get involved."

Here's what the politicians had to say:

Ohio Rep. Kristina Roegner (R-42)

  • Talking points: fiscal responsibility, constitutionally-limited government and free markets.
  • When elected in 2010, Roegner and peers faced an $8 billion budget deficit, a 9.6 percent unemployment rate and dismal job creation (48th in the nation).
  • In two years, Ohio leaders worked to balance the $8 billion deficit without raising taxes and pulled unemployment below 8 percent.
  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Ohio now ranks ninth in job creation and is first in the Midwest.

Ohio Sen. Frank LaRose (R-27)

  • Touted the elimination of Ohio Estate Tax.
  • Push for limited government: “When we talk about limited government, when we talk about personal freedom, we’re talking about regulatory reform,” he said.
  • Proponent of the Common Sense Initiative (CSI), designed to make Ohio’s business rules and regulations make sense while lowering the tax burden on companies.
  • Referenced his involvement with the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review, which analyzes proposed rules and regulations to decide whether or not they pass a cost benefit analysis established by the CSI.

U.S. Congressman Jim Renacci (R-Ohio)

  • Overriding message: Ensure President Barack Obama loses on Election Day to avoid deeper federal deficits.
  • By the numbers: $45.4 trillion in federal spending proposed by Obama Administration from fiscal year 2013-2022; $25.9 trillion projected federal deficit in 2022; support drastic cutting to overcome current $15.6 trillion national debt.
  • “We do not have a tax problem (in Washington), we have a spending problem," he said. "And shame on anybody asking anyone, and I mean anyone, to send any more money down to Washington till Washington learns that they just can’t spend (wastefully).”

Ohio House Republican candidate "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher

  • Federal government disrupted automobile industry through “overregulation.” Keep government out of private markets.
  • “I don’t know about you, but I drive a Dodge 4x4 pickup truck, and I love leaving a carbon footprint wherever I go,” he said in reference to Obama’s push for production of the eco-friendly Chevy Volt.
  • Vying for limited federal government and strong state rights.
  • Regarding oil production: “If (environmentalists) want to save the world, they’d want us drilling here in America because we’re going to do it cleaner, we’re going to do it safer, we’re going to do it better.”

i came by about 4:30 and there was no way the total number of people in attendance [including the entire support staff and people manning the various booths] was even 1,000.

75%+ of the crowd was either in the pavilion [capacity 295 ] or between the last row of seats and the first fence

I know the author strives for accuracy in his articles, so I'm guessing that 3,500 figure included all people who had come and gone to the rally for the entire day, probably more than you would see at any one given time.

from 4:30 on there was nobody coming or going...somehow, for that 3,500 to be correct, 70% of the total crowd would have left before quinn and rose spoke....highly unlikely

I gather that Joe is not a 'Green' plumber.

“I don’t know about you, but I drive a Dodge 4x4 pickup truck, and I love leaving a carbon footprint wherever I go,” Now there's some plain ignorance. Why would anyone want to listen to a dipstick like that ? And anyone who agrees with that stupidity needs to move to China. They have no EPA, regulation, conscience or humanity. They don't care about rivers, trees, air, or people. Only profits. WOW ! Sounds like tea party country to me !

Anyone worried about China's impact on the planet's health should protest in China where they would get a bigger bang for their protest.

Oops, that bang may be the sound of the communist cell door closing.

@JIM, you're being generous. In China if you break the law, you disappear forever. Jail might be a step up.

I'm a teaparty conservative who drives a V8 pickup, and I think Joe the plumber's statement was idiodic. I'll still vote for him because if he makes one good decision in office, it'll be a better record than Marcy Kaptur.

Seriously, Joe's running for office? The previous two posters hit the nail on the head concerning the ignorance he displays in his comments. And this is the "highlight" of what he had to say? Yikes...hopefully these Tea Party candidates don't have a chance in hell of winning anything.

And the Teatards continue to prove why they're considered a laughing stock and referred to as 'teatards.'

They say one thing and do another. And Rep. Roegner's "talking points" are nothing short of laughable. I'm sure the uneducated and ignorant in attendance did NOT even bother to ask the do-nothing TeaPublicans (Renacci, Roegner and LaRose) why they voted FOR BIG OIL/GAS and AGAINST Ohio citizens? Of course not. But if it was Democrats doing this, you'd be they'd be called out by the Beavis & Butthead's in attendance.

Funny how they think BHO is going to be tossed out. There's more of an outcry to oust incumbents and Teapublicans like the ones in attendance.

Do you remember when science was pure, truth and accuracy were honored and sought after ??? Well, not in the 21st century where academic funding drives selective interpretation of results.

It appears to me that the only science that's settles is political science !

Jim, what about the science that backs up your claim above that glaciers in the Himalayas are growing? Is that settled? Because this is the first I'm hearing of that and apparently it was too inconvenient for you to cite a source for that claim.

I don`t particularly like the Dodge Pick-up line either----I would like to hear the whole statement---but compared to his opposition, I`ll take a chance on Joe.

His oposition with all the years in power have done NOTHING ---except get re-elected, and get re-elected, and get re-elected--- --- --- --- ---?

I`ll take a chance on JOE---

Thank you for your kind attention!

Ohio will have to shift some political gears to move forward economically. I grew up in Ohio and I love that beautiful state. I want to see Ohio and our beloved nation recover their former equilibrium.

Jim, can you say analogy ?? That's the comparison of two or more things. Like, for instance, Joe the Plumber THINKING and China's environmental positions. Get it ?

I get that you are changing the subject. Try protesting the big offenders in India, Brazil, China. Get it? Their industries are the unregulated behemoths that damage the planets. Stop leading from behind.

I was at the rally for the whole day and there was MAYBE, MAYBE 1000 people there. I will say the crowd was White, Uneducated, Lower Middle Class and over 50. As the U.S moves forward and Baby Boomers die off, the demand for an educated populance becomes greater and our population becomes less white, events like these will be attended by about 4 people.
