Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on.
American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Brecksville.
Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities.
Check out the Small Business Saturday website or our business directory to find a full list of local shops and restaurants you can visit this weekend. Here are a few highlighted on the Small Business site:
- Paul Duda Gallery
- Brecksville Fine Jewelers
- Maryann's Homemade Candies
- The Framer's Gallery
- Crochet Innovations
- Bookman and Son Fine Jewelers
- Finesse Jewelers

Rachel A. Torchia, a member of the Brecksville Chamber of Commerce and president of Gateway Title, said in an email that she’s an advocate of shopping local and encourages people to “shop Brecksville first.” There’s not a lot of retail in town, she said, but there are a lot of businesses that provide services, like doctors, insurance companies, real estate agencies and salons and spas.
“I appreciate it when local residents use my real estate title agency—many times they tell me that they did it because they believe in supporting local small businesses,” she wrote.

The Brecksville Chamber of Commerce perspective--We are your community. We live with you. We hire your family, friends & neighbors. 43% of the American workforce is employed by small local businesses. Shopping local, independent retailers keeps more of your money in your community--we pay taxes to support roads, schools, parks & libraries. Local business owners donate more & often to your children’s schools, churches & local worthy community causes than non-local owners. We buy many of our supplies & inventory locally. You use less gas than traveling to the mall, so you have more money to actually spend.
Our businesses create a unique community character. Many restore local landmarks for their businesses (Maryann Candies or Vertical Runner). Local Brecksville Chamber of Commerce businesses partner together to bring more benefits & value to customers & local non-profits such as the Brecksville Stables. Brecksville has many retail businesses-The Framer's Gallery, Crochet Innovations, Finesse Jewelers etc. Our service businesses have a lot of retail--Bella Toccare carries Aveda products & jewelry designed/made by local resident/business owner Lila Tamulewicz (Chaco Designs), Creekside sells bakery & wine, Brecksville Florist gift section is stocked with products--many made by other local businesses. Vibrant businesses locally such as these create character & prosperity for our city which impacts the value of your home. All are important reasons to shop local.
