I think by this time, most area schools are back in session for the new school year: Brecksville-Broadview Heights certainly is. My Facebook "News Feed" has been filled with proud posts from teary-eyed moms, sad that their babies are starting another year of school, but somewhat enthused that the once-familiar rhythm of a typical school day will soon return. I’ve seen many, many first-day-of-school outfits, and the kids all look adorable.
The malls have been busy; Target has been packed. Our local Walgreens has all of the kids’ school supply lists just outside the entrance. A friend of mine just spent three hours hand-labeling every single required school supply for her kids, even each crayon (it was actually required by the school).
My daughter doesn’t start preschool for another couple of weeks, and preschool is much, much different than “big kid school.” Amelia’s school supply list consists of one box of 5-ounce cups. I don’t have to label those.
We bought Amelia a new lunchbox to take to Grammy and Grampy’s house for the new year. We compromised with the sneaker purchases; of course, my daughter wanted sparkles and glitter. She’s now at that age where she’s not growing as quickly and most of her clothes from last year should still fit.
She’s eagerly awaiting her first day back at preschool. We’ve been practicing writing A-m-e-l-i-a with lower-case letters because, as my daughter would say, “that’s the 4-year-old way.”
There are lots of things she does that are “the 4-year-old way.” It’s so wonderful to watch your children learn – no matter their age – and discover lots of “ways” as they grow. But they’ll never know the way they make their parents’ hearts grow each and every day. We’ll all grow together this school year, just in different ways.
Enjoy the school year, moms and dads!
