The Presidential Debate: Who Won?

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney debated issues of domestic and foreign policy Tuesday night in New York—who do you think did best?

The second presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney is done.

The candidates met at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, on Oct. 16 and debated a variety of topics from equal pay for women to immigration reform to foreign security in a town hall format. Because the question was not about Fast and Furious! It was about gun control in this country. Romney went wandering off and never answered the question. He also never answered the question about Equal Pay but went on a tale of hiring women and binders.

Two questions totally ignored.

You realize there were women living in poverty before he took office? Throw out some other numbers as well. How about oil prices are lower than they were five years ago. Gas prices are lower than they were when Obama gave his acceptance speech at the convention in 08. More students are in college than they were when he took the oath of office. Sure, they are all facts, but out of context they also mean nothing. Stop spouting talking points.

Romney got his a** handed to him on the Lybia topic. He and his people didn't research the facts and thought the attack wasn't called a terrorist attack until 14 days later. The true fact was it was called a terrorist attack the day after the attack.

The Repubs have used the attack that killed the 4 Americans as a political weapon from the day that it happened. The sad part is, as usual, they were talking out of their behinds then and have continued this practice into present day.

Romney ducked questions that were need to know. You think Obama has 3 million women living in poverty, 47 million on food stamps? Wait and see how that number rises if Romney gets elected! If you are going to spout off how many people are on fs, unemployment and so on... send a link to support your numbers. Otherwise, you sound like Romney talking without supporting his facts, I'm sorry to say.

I did read the Rose Garden address and Obama does say that the event in Benghazi was an act of terror. He compared it with the 9/11 event. He also threatened the perpetrators.
This is what Obama said:
"No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done."

Also, the attackers themselves said they were attacking the Benghazi compound in revenge for the video. Were they lying?
From the NY Times:
"To Libyans who witnessed the assault and know the attackers, there is little doubt what occurred: a well-known group of local Islamist militants struck the United States Mission without any warning or protest, and they did it in retaliation for the video. That is what the fighters said at the time, speaking emotionally of their anger at the video without mentioning Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden or the terrorist strikes of 11 years earlier. And it is an explanation that tracks with their history as members of a local militant group determined to protect Libya from Western influence."

@ Glinda, et al: On September 20, eight days after Obama claims to have called the Benghazi attack an 'act of terror'...Jay Carney affirmed to reporters that the White House had NEVER called it a 'Terrorist Attack'.

Mr. Barnes, It's the failed presidency of George W. The Tea Party made all of that worse, and the pathetic attempt to buy the election as a result of the Supreme Court's Citizen's United decision has doomed us all to more elections just like this until we overturn it. If you don't manage to steal this election, we may have a chance to stop the takeover of our democracy by corporations and the absurdly rich people who run them. And Bob...how do you know what Rmoney's resume is? Hi Kim - I always find it amazing how Republicans play the victim when it is obvious things didn't go their way. Manup/Womanup and just admit Romney lost the debate last night. It had nothing to do with Ms. Crowley. She didn't control what words came out of Romney's/ nor Obama's mouths. Romney just didn't hold his own last night and often got caught in his own chameleon stripes - am I a conservative now or a moderate, etc. And perhaps if Romney didn't spend so much time how "did you say the word terror or not", maybe he could have gotten more of his message across. And finally, I do love how Romney wants big government off the back of small business owners, the middle class, etc. but strongly supports big government in the private lives of all citizens: right to deny abortion, right to deny marriage, right to deny immigration, right to give federal money to private schools, etc. etc. etc. Is there not anyone in the Republican camp that sees the hypocrisy of this?

How is Mitt Romney winning the poll?

The moderator had to keep Mitt Romney in control. Mitt Romney blew it during the election. Obama had clear concrete answers while Mitt Romney went around the answers or gave a generic response.

Also, lets not forget the whole shenanigans with the Act of Terror comment. The audience cheered for Obama after Mitt Romney tried to make a point but failed miserably. Many are even saying that Mitt Romney's failure lost the debate.

And again, Mitt Romney fails to say how exactly his plan will work. Obama made an excellent point that you don't just hand over something to someone (like money) and they will promise they will increase that money and they will tell you after. You just say NO.

Oh god, the equal pay. Did Mitt Romney even answer that question directly? All I heard was "I hire women! I am flexible!", they don't care. They want to know the answer on equal pay.

Oh, and why did Romney try to shift the immigration reforms topic to Obama's pensions? Incredibly off topic and nothing big either. Romney seems pretty desperate and I loved Obama's comment on how he doesn't need to check it because it isn't as big as his.

Oh, and.

A President has ZERO effect on gas prices. That's because it's worldwide commodity and it's traded publicly.

Romney was asked again last night, by a citizen, what tax loopholes he would close on the wealthy to pay for the tax cuts he has proposed to give the wealthy and he again refused to answer the question. Offering the goodies w/o leveling with the people as to the costs is salesmanship not leadership.

Every chance Obama was given to answer a question, he wasted on telling us why Romney is the wrong person for the job. Why couldn't he use that time to tell us how the next four years will be different over the last? Romney attempted to answer several questions with direct information and responses in less time given to him by the poorly prepared moderator. Clearly he's the only one who saw what the point of a debate is. I walk away feeling no different about my vote, and thinking the debate was a three ring circus and worthless.

As for the audience clapping for an inaccurate remark - the First Lady was the most enthusiastic one... breaking debate rules. Go figure.

Gas prices under Bush were demonized and he was demonized because they said he was manipulating the price of gas....this is liberal tactics at it's best.

AGAIN, time to point out the hypocrisy of the left.

Bush and gas prices bad. ($1.84 Gal) Obama and gas prices good. ($3.84)

Bush, protecting and defending us from terror attacks bad, Obama and illegal wars in Libya and Yemen good.

Really, Joe?! The price of gas, when it was at its highest was when Bush was in office. It went over $4.00 per gallon for awhile. If Bush was protecting us from attacks, he wouldn't have cut federal money(s) going to police, firemen which affected airport security and relaxed security at the airports that Clinton set in place and maybe 9-11 would have never happened.

Joe with more Republican stupidity. Good grief. No wonder why people like you who make up the Republican Party are morons.

Republicans look extremely stupid (more stupid) and uneducated when they play the gas price card. Gas was dirt cheap because the financial collapse (remember where the stock market is) and crude prices had plummeted because world demand did.

Demand has since increased and so have crude oil prices. Now why they are at the prices they are is NOT because of the President. Perhaps if you weren't too busy stroking yourself off to what Rush and Hannity feed you, you might be dumb, rather than stupid.

You are awarded an additional 5 points for the crude reference to self-pleasuring and an additional 1 point each for mentioning both Rush and Hannity!

Since the debates are already a spectacle they should just take it all the way and make it like a full blown sporting event. Instead of using undecided voters they should use highly partisan crowds (one extremely liberal and one extremely conservative) and allow the audience to cheer and boo the candidates responses. This would give it more of the home/away feel of a real sporting event. Also, they should introduce the candidates the same way the players are introduced at an NBA game.

Obama most definitely won! He spoke about his many achievements in contrast to Romney’s sketchy and often disproven plans. And, Romney was way too aggressive, rude and broke the debate rules by asking questions directly of the President. Romney also demonstrated his interest in making political gains over the Libya incident, something he’s been doing since that incident was first learned of, and he avoided answering the “equal pay for equal work by women” question because he opposes equal pay. Romney wants to take women back to the 1960s, based on his plan to end Planned Parenthood and other backward aims.

Most media outlets and polls agree, Obama won.

Economy: Romney wins 58-40%

Health care: Romney wins 49-46%.

Taxes: Romney wins 51-44%.

Deficit: Romney wins 49-36%.

Strong leader: Romney wins 49-46%.

More likeable: Obama wins 46-39%.

The worst news is that 25% of voters switched their vote to Romney and 25% went to Obama.

I guess people forget that the average price of gas (while Bush was president) was over $3 in January of 2008 and over $4 in July of 2008. The prices then fell in the winter, as they usually do.

I'm doing much better now than I was 4 years ago. Last year I bought my first home. This year, my first car. I own a few businesses and my clients keep me busy because they are busy too. My credit score keeps going up. I pay the same for health insurance and have more coverage now. My employer started offering us a benefit for the first time ever.

Hibs, are we better off than when Bush was in?! Just barely but still better off in many ways. If Rmney gets in, America as we know it, will change beyond belief. I voted for Obama, also, four years ago. I do not care for a lot of things he did and didn't do but the Republicans have someone worse that Obama. You cannot complain about the price of gas that much because, under Baby Bush, it was over 4.00 per gallon. If your health insurance is 800.00 more a month, I'd find another job or the reason it is so much higher but it's not all Obama's fault.

why do you think i am on here pointing out you propaganda pumpers and spam spreaders who just want to stir things up; let me tell you, to get the terms changed so they prevent garbage being posted to local editions; so keep calling the editors, please, and bring the attention to this topic we want

adam, I guess when you become an editor, then you might better understand how Patch works, but until then, you can just posting your opinion.

Now by what you posted here; "or are you trying to bully me off here next"that you must be making a reference to lyn, Now with lyn, she was somebody that I had never referenced or posted a reply to ever on here. She, on the other had, decided to target me and brought false accusations against me and when pressed for facts, she obviously could not provide and, so she opted to shirk away in a melodramatic escape that (not surprisingly) brought nothing but amusement to others on here who were actually happy to see her go. I certainly don't know her history on here, but what I do know is that from what I saw, she had no problem spewing complete fiction as fact, and seeming from the reaction that her departure received, other people were very happy to see her take a time out.

Now I obviously don't come to these articles to engage on the ridiculousness of local versus national contributors, but I am not going to let somebody falsely slander me either. You may call that bullying, but all she had to do was apologize once for her lying and misrepresentation of me and that would have been the end of it. She didn't just fail herself, but she lost credibility in the community and I think that probably was a bigger factor in why she took her time out.

Comment_arrow

Watts

1:20 am on Saturday, October 20, 2012

Now with you, you haven't yet made any false claims. In fact, you really havent done anything except make some pesky posts that don't really seem to have a point at all. That is why I tried to draw out if you had a point or not. Obviously, you had no point, as much as you had a gripe. And it is noted. It doesn't mean much in the scope of things, but lets just say that you have voiced your opinion about people posting from outside of your area (which seems to be vaguely defined). I have no problem with you, except if you continue to fly around me like a nat, contributing nothing. So there is no bullying and no reason to continue this conversation. I never approached you in this thread and if you limit your engagement with me to the subjects being discussed, then everything will be copacetic again. There is no reason for you to reply to me or to post about me, unless it is about the substance of the subject of the article or within the logical progression that the discussion has taken from the original article.

a bit of an overreaction and tantrum, don't you think?
constantly saying apologize, apologize; you poor thing, when there was nothing there

and if you did ever follow her comments, she has corrected herself when wrong; i think that is why other people did not react the way you had hoped when she left; she was willing to be openminded, unlike others i read on here

Here is what Romney really will govern as the head of his party: 1. Repeal the 16th Amendment (Federal Income Tax) 2. Police universities for liberal bias. 3. Defend the Electoral College and oppose the National Popular Vote 4. Support onstitutional amendments to ban both abortion and same sex marriage
5. Reshape Medicare into a market driven voucher program 6. Develop drilling on federal lands as well as the National Park System, and encourage coal production. 7. Oppose all gun control laws and restore assault weapon ban 8. Make English the official national language. 9. Dismantle the National Health Care Act/ObamaCare
10. Encourage home schooling - including single sex classes 11. Teach abstinence until marriage and dismantle Planned Parenthood
So if you really believe that Romney/Ryan will move this country forward after reading the Republican Party Platform, then welcome to a USA that actually will have more government in citizen's private lives than ever before!

Adam just wants to "ban" anyone that disagrees with his "opinion." We really don't need a "location tracker" here. He only starts this when Obama supporters post comments that make actual sense. Anhyone who thinks a public forum is "ONLY" for local people has a screw loose.

Hi Adam - Isn't "banning" free speech a bit severe? I mean some people have homes in more than one state - Ohio/Florida; Ohio/California, etc. So not sure how you can determine someone's legal residence. And afterall, does it really matter? This is a NATIONAL election and no boundaries exist between states for freedom of speech, or residence - well, on second thought, maybe in Arizona!

freedom of speech?
people misuse this term and throw it around without realizing what is involved

if one desires freedom of speech, have your own online newspaper without any terms of use, or select any terms you decide

can you impose your implied freedom of speech, say what you want, anytime you want,
in school?
in church?
in court?
at work?
in another persons living room?
in print, like kiddie porn?
at even you own local public square?
no
there are limitations that are and can be imposed

and patch is a private enterprise that can determine its own terms and could decide that people using its forum to promote an agenda would not be permitted, and they could allow for weeding out those having discussions about issues because they have a vacation home here or lived here or family here or you name it

it doesn't take too much analysis of a persons comment history to decide if they should be banned, just as they decide this is for " personal and non-commercial purposes"

That person Lyn (who has since disappeared) started this whole thing, and I venture to guess the rest of you would not have even noticed who was posting, as long as you were able to insult them. You just jump on this silly bandwagon, and start restating what others have told you. Here's what we learned from the first two debates:

Romney has a secret plan to cut unemployment.

Romney has a secret plan to eliminate the federal deficit.

Romney has a secret plan to cut the cost of higher education.

Romney has a secret plan to eliminate tax deductions and exemptions and credits.

Romney has a secret plan to cut federal spending.

Romney has a secret plan for equal pay for women.

Romney has a secret plan for healthcare reform.

Richard Nixon had secret plan to end the war in Vietnam, so secret that even Nixon didn't know it. Guess what. Romney doesn't even say the same thing two days in a row (other than the talking points he repeats endlessly in response to any questions), so how can you folks know WHAT you're supporting?

tom m, if you had even a sniff of a clue about how our society runs, you'd be able to see that we are only one ultra-conservative Supreme Court justice short of us never in our lifetimes getting another favorable decision. Even before Reagan came along, there was a conservative long-range plan to pack the Court with the most conservative Justices available. All that has accomplished is to give ever greater power to the corporations that have already been very busy buying all the representatives and senators they can, to consolidate their control of our lives. It isn't the "big government" we should be concerned with. Do you work for yourself? I ask, because if you work for a corporation, how could you not recognize that all the benefits now go to the top, and your paycheck doesn't grow like it used to...unless you're part of upper management. This has been accelerating over the past 30 years...while you were buying the conservative pablum. You haven't noticed? REALLY?

BTW, I don't drink Kool-Aid. I think for myself.

Robert, you are right on, and Kim doesn't have a clue what you are talking about. She is brainwashed by big business into thinking that they create all the jobs, and that people can live off of what they are paying. You are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT in saying that everything flows UP now...all benefits. In previous times, companies were willing to share the fruits of everyone's labor in the form of pay raises, bonuses, profit sharing...they appreciated their workers...but NO MORE. There are a few that still do this, but most large companies now focus on the bottom line, how to work the workers harder and longer (and with less of them) so that the CEOs can go home with million-dollar bonuses. Rather than "create" jobs, they are eliminating them, so that their profit is higher for the top-level management.

CNN said obama won the debate 46-39% But I think the other poll questions tell a bigger story on which way the voters are shifting (these are CNN's poll results)

Economy: Romney wins 58-40%

Health care: Romney wins 49-46%.

Taxes: Romney wins 51-44%.

Deficit: Romney wins 49-36%.

Strong leader: Romney wins 49-46%.

More likeable: Obama wins 46-39%.

The worst news for obama is that 25% of voters switched their vote to Romney and 25% went to Obama.

Apparently James Murphy, the only thing we share on this issue is our namesake. The sober and informed American realizes that our economy is experiencing an historical transition. The global market does not suit the interests of the country with the highest standard of living. We have no choice but to retro-fit our country to deal with low wage / no health insurance competition. In addition, the emergence of a high tech economy requires significantly less labor. The first signs of this new reality appeared during the Bush administration through no fault of his own. Therefore, the 2008 financial fraud came along at the absolute worst time. I submit that it is pie in the sky thinking that, given these challenges, in 4 years "happy days would be here again". We have a tough economic structural issue going forward regardless of who inhabits an Oval Office. The American people do not want to see the sober truth for what it is. That said, I disagree with you James Murphy, I believe the President is poised for re-election.

With all do respect Kim L., you're comparing apples and oranges. Mr. Mihaly could start his own company tomorrow and not benefit from the influence enjoyed by multi-national corporations. Sheila Bair in her book "Bull by the Horns" documents the influence Wall Street lobbying had leading up to the 2008 financial fraud as well as the influence still going on to this day in the financial sector. The senior prescription drug program was written by lobbyists from the pharmaceutical industry. The legalese in the bill disallows the government to use the millions of seniors that the taxpayers are subsidizing from negotiating lower per unit drug costs. My point is that we can argue the degree at which corporate America influences are government but it's folly to suggest the corporate influence isn't a legitimate issue. You choose to ascribe the word "hate" to Mr. Mihaly's concern of corporate influence when a review of his postings is devoid of the word "hate".

adam......You aren't a very good forum cop because I am NOT from Wisconsin and never been there. But this election is a Federal Election........not a State Election.

ROMNEY: "I know he keeps saying, `You want to take Detroit bankrupt.' Well, the president took Detroit bankrupt. You took General Motors bankrupt. You took Chrysler bankrupt. So when you say that I wanted to take the auto industry bankrupt, you actually did. And I think it's important to know that that was a process that was necessary to get those companies back on their feet, so they could start hiring more people. That was precisely what I recommended and ultimately what happened."

THE FACTS: What Romney recommended did not happen, and his proposed path probably would have forced General Motors and Chrysler out of business. He opposed using government money to bail out the automakers, instead favoring privately financed bankruptcy restructuring. But the automakers were bleeding cash and were poor credit risks. The banking system was in crisis. So private loans weren't available. Without government aid, both companies probably would have gone under and their assets would have been sold in pieces.

Phyllis, my decision to vote for the President entails more than just the two candidates. The two party system has served this country well over the years. I see America as a road with a right curb and a left curb. Those two curbs have enabled our society to travel down the middle of the road. However, from time to time throughout our history, one of those two curbs have been lowered as result of an extreme political shift. Currently it is the Repubs who have cast their moderates aside. I see our government as having 4 centers of power. The Judicial branch (Supreme Court), the executive (President) and both houses of Congress. Currently, the Repubs control two (house and Supreme Court) and the Dems control two (President and Senate). In the context of the Repubs shift to the far right, I do not see it as a healthy proposition to empower the Repubs with 3 out of 4 of the power centers in Washington. With a lowered right curb within a tenuous national backdrop, this is not the time to go off of either side of the road. Therefore, I have concluded that the center of the road is where this country must be at this time. Gary Johnson? He's not going to win so to what end?

Gosh...I agree about the 'center of the road' direction. I know Gary Johnson is not going to win so I will vote for Romney. I think Romney is more middle of the road than any other GOP nominee, and that is why a lot of the GOP didn't want him. He is certainly not the Tea Party choice. I was a fan of Clinton...but Obama is too far left for me and I just can't abide it. If Romney wins, you will see that he is not a far right guy. Otherwise, how did he do so well as a gov in a dominantly democrat state? As to either side of the road, we are so far left now we will have a hard time navigating to the center and it will be impossible to do so if Obama gets another term.

The national security issues also seriously bother me.

Murphy-Solon

Phyllis, I believe the totality of the evidence speaks well of the President's national security bonafides. Rather Romney's true beliefs are more center or not is irrelevant. The Tea Party will keep their boot on Romney's throat in a first term using re-election as their leverage. ( See John Boehner). The main problem Phyllis is, at this point in the campaign, you're left extrapolating as to what policies Romney actually believes.

With Romney's success and experience in business I find that a better qualification than community organizing. I think this nation needs to be run from the middle of the road. Special interest groups both right and left distract from important issues such as the economy and national security and they turn me off. Romney has demonstrated successfully his ability to work with Democrats when he was governor. I want someone willing to work with both parties, flexible in ideology in order to negotiate successfully on important issues. Obama has shown that he cannot lead in that way. He is 'its my way or the highway', he even rejected Bowles-Simpson. We are in a mess and we need a new approach.

Same-Sex marriage, Late-term abortions (paid by taxpayers), a war on Christmas meaning, are what the current Democratic party represents. Obamacare will start costing in 2013-2014. Don't be lured into this job-killing handout. It's not Free.
Your Job will be in jeopardy and a GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CURRENT employer Health plan.
That is totally against what your conscience should respect.
Any Catholic must get this country's mentality on another direction.
Vote out the contra-Catholic party. Your faith and family are at stake.
Moral standards will affect the long-term future of YOU and your family.
Separation of church-state is a Myth!
Stealing your Religion is what the current "progressive" Democrats are set to accomplish.
Don't let it happen. Especially, you Catholic women voters. No one can take away your "freedom" to your body. But, this Obama WILL eventually STEAL your Faith and Family strength that makes up the Catholic (Christian) traditions that formed this country.
Once that base is destroyed , America's foundation crumbles.

Fracking and the dumping of toxic wastewater from fracking .... is an existential threat to the state of Ohio. I would like to see some politicians with the courage to advocate for protecting the people of Ohio and our environment. We seem to live in a plutocracy at this point .... rather than a democracy. The people with huge fortunes have been able to use their money to rig the system and get their candidates elected. They can then get laws passed that will allow them to make even more money. An example is Ohio HB 231 passed in 2004. That is why local communities in Ohio no longer have the authority to regulate the fracking industry within their jurisdiction. Romney and Ryan represent special interests that want to reduce or eliminate regulations that protect our environment and the health of our citizens.
