Voluntary Recall Issued on Excedrin, Bufferin, NoDoz and Gas-X

Bottles may contain broken or stray pills

Drugmaker Novartis is voluntarily recalling bottles of Excedrin, NoDoz, Gas-X-Prevention and Bufferin in the U.S. because they may contain stray pills or broken or chipped tablets.

Select bottles of these over the counter medications are under recall after an internal review and complaints of "broken gelcaps, chipped tablets and inconsistent bottle packaging line clearance practices" where inspectors could not rule out the possibility of pills getting into the wrong bottles, according to a release from the company.

The company has not received any complaints about the possible mix-ups or broken tablets and says there have been no reports of health issues leading to the recall.

Here are all medications on the recall list:

  • All Bufferin products expiring Dec. 20, 2013 or earlier, including regular strength tablets, low dose tablets and extra-strength tablets.
  • All Gas-X Prevention products expiring Dec. 20, 2013 or earlier.
  • All NoDoz products expiring Dec. 20, 2014 or earlier.
  • All of the following Excedrin products expiring Dec. 20, 2014 or earlier: Excedrin Extra Strength Caplets, Excedrin Extra Strength Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin Extra Strength Gel Caplets, Excedrin Extra Strength Tablets, Excedrin Back & Body Caplets, Excedrin Sinus Headache Caplets, Excedrin Migraine Caplets, Excedrin Migraine Gel Tablets, Excedrin Migraine Tablets, Excedrin Menstrual Complete Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin PM Caplets, Excedrin PM Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin PM Tablets, Excedrin Tension Headache Caplets, Excedrin Tension Headache Express Gel Caplets, Excedrin Tension Headache Gel Tablets

Novartis is asking that all medications on the list either be destroyed or returned. Visit the Novartis website for a product return and reimbursement form.

I have to tell you, the samething has been happening to me as with Patricia. I take Excedrin migraine all the time. I get horrible migraines all the time. I took my excedrin migraine last week and kept vomiting and I was dizzy until the next day. I thought maybe I was getting the bug, until today when I took them again and the same thing happened. I only came to this website because I wanted to see if they were having any problems with the drug. I am not a hypochondriac either, I think it just seems pretty strange!

donny jacobowitz - I had the same thing, I took my last two pills as I woke up with a bad headace, later in the early afternoon I had the worse stomachache! Continued through the night and most of today. I don't know if it is a bug going around that I contacted or if it has to do with the excedrine! But the abdominal pain was bad!

I love Back and Body Excedrine, it is the only thing that helps the pain in my legs since an accident, including rx drugs, which usually just made me sleepy. I looked at 4 stores today before I finally realized something was up...then I ask the pharmacy and tols me about the excedrine recall, hope the problem is resolved soon and my favorite meds are back on the shelves.

If you have a Dollar General near you try the brand they carry it really works!!! The box says Migraine Relief and mentions similar ingredients as Excedrin... They are correct and the cost is $1 for 24 caplets... Good deal and it really works.

I completely agree with Sierra, blaming Excedrin for getting the flu is ridiculous. They're saying the pills may have been chipped or misplaced, not that they were contaminated. The packages always come with an insert showing exactly the way the pills are supposed to look, not to mention there's always a picture on the bottle. If you get a bottle of your normal pills and they look wrong, it should be obvious not to take them. This being a voluntary recall and I can tell that I have the right pills in my bottle, I see no reason for me to turn mine in. Luckily I have enough to last me for a few months. Yay for costco huge bottles!

I found out about the recall today when I went to Walmart to purchase the excedrine migraine. I hate this has happened, bc this is the only thing I could take and half way function. I have intractable vascular migraines and have been nonresponsive to medications and treatments. I could take 2 excedrine and notice relief within 30 minutes. I hope the problem will be resolved promptly and that excedrine migraine will be available again soon. I hope this recall doesn't make people report false claims. I think it is awesome and you get relief without the side effects of most prescription meds.

I am the same way! I have tried the "Equate" version of Excedrine Migraine and it works fairly well. But today I didn't have anything with me when a headache came on, so I stopped in at WalMart and didn't need a full bottle of pills, so I grabbed a small (20 ct) bottle of Advil Migraine, liquid tablets, and they worked surprisingly well. It may have been that my headache wasn't as serious as my others, or that I caught it pretty fast. but give them a try, at least until Excedrine comes back!

Renee, I was diagnosed with migraines over 30 yrs ago and have taken numerous Rx meds but when I found the Excedrin Mirgraine product and tried it was very glad to feel relief also within about 30 minutes. I do still keep the "hard stuff" on hand when/if they are ever not fixed by the EM but strongly prefer EM - can't wait for Novartis to get it all worked out and the drug(s) back on the shelf - soon!!!!

I totally agree to what you said, I too hope it comes back soon, because I too have migraines. I did find something until excedrine makes a comeback its called BC powder it has 50 powder packets and you put it in water like that plop plop fizz fizz stuff within 30min.I was feeling good. I believe the fact that since its a powder that when its dissolved in water it goes to the pain pretty quick. I am still going to always buy excedrine when it does come back but I believe I will also start buying this BC powder too, ( just in case when excedrine does come back and I forget to buy more and run out of it that it will serve as a back up plan for pain)The ingredients in BC powder 845mgs of aspririn and 65mgs of caffeine a pain reliever aid it just doesn't have acetaminophen which is tylenol I was told.it could be the equivalence of excedrine it would cost more but to me to get the BC powder and tylenol it will do for me now until MY EXCEDRINE MIGRAINE comes back I found it at the dollar stores for about $5.35 or a little more. I hope this helps you or anyone that suffers with migraine as I do. Cheri

I love excedrin too. This is the only things that has help me with my migraine that I can buy over the counter. Monday I took two and have been sick since. Can't really say if this was the cause but I need to go to hospital to get check..not because of the excedrin but to know what is causing me to sick like this. Sure hope it's not my EXCEDRIN.

Stop freaking out people, it is not the end of the world. Simply take some extra strength Tylenol,(Acetaminophen) plus an Asprin and wash them down with a can of coke, or take some caffeine pills or eat some chocolate or drink some tea. The caffeine is a vasodiolator and helps the medicine get to the receptors in the brain faster and more of it will actually reach your receptors and help with the head aches. Caffeine additives make pain relievers 40% more effective in treating headaches. Caffeine also helps the body absorb headache drugs more quickly, bringing faster relief. By adding caffeine and, in turn, taking less medication, you can reduce the risk for potential side effects and possible drug addiction.

Jeremiah, I agree with your comments. My brother and I both get migraines, but if I can catch my headache early I can stop it from getting worse. My brother says he takes 3 excedrine migraine pills with coffee. I asked my doctor and she said yes that is fine! I was surprised that she agreed! But it seems to work for me. I do have prescription imitrex but try to save for the bad migraines as they are really expensive.

Weird - caffeine bothers me but not the Edcedrin Migraine! I gotta be weird! Lol I like Jeremiah's idea, though I think I'd try 1/2 cup of regular coffee for the caffeine as I am diabetic also. (Tho I'd LOVE an ice cold Coke that's NOT Diet!) Careful with the Tylenol though folks. Recent problems with that now ::sigh:: If you all didn't see my other posts, the Office Supply stores online (you can put in your zip code) have the Extra Strength Excedrin, a lot of them do. SAME ingredients as the Migraine but for me doesn't work the same - strange! In any case, the ES Excedrin is at many of those office stores but some are charging like $35.00 for a bottle of 50. If you REALLY want the Extra Strength, I guess......if they had the Migraine I would pay it - once. Geez hurry up Excedrin makers!!

Sorry pal but caffiene and Extra strength Tylenol doesn't cut it when you have extreme Migraines. Trust me, I've tried everything. Even some of the doctor prescribed drugs don't work as good as the Excedrin Migraine. I hope they work out the bugs and get back in circulation soon. I've never experienced a problem with the pills. Neither has my husband or oldest son who also experience migraines and also take EM.

Actually, coffee helps when I have a migraine. I have been on various prescription migraine medication for over 20 years, and to tell someone your way of treating your migraines is a little incorrect. The first RX I was on was Fiorinal, sort of similar to EM. I discovered, as many of you probably will, that overuse of this type causes rebound headaches - and you would do better to use this medication much less - just ask ANY doctor, or read ANY literature. I know the dependence on something when you get relieve, but in the long run, if you are getting so many migraines - SEE YOUR DOCTOR. You may have started treating tension headaches or sinus headaches with this medication and also been led down this road due to overuse when you really don't have true migraines. Some people very easily say "I have a migraine", but its just a bad headache. But, I'm not saying people don't have them - - I know, I do get them, and I am under a doctor's care for them.
I have been reading all these comments for so long and feel for those who are suffering - I truly understand. But see your doctor, and don't overuse EM - you will be getting more headaches because of it.

Jeremiah - you obviously do not suffer from migraines. It is not your run of the mill headache. Chocolate would cause a migraine. I won't go on and on about your post, but there is alot more to migraines. Caffeine can help, but it can do the opposite too.

when you live with migraines that make it impossible to function and a medication helps then maybe you will have a clue. It the amount of medication they use that makes it effective. And your not a doctor so don't give medical advice.

Funny that tylenol
(acetaminophen) has been in the news lately with lawsuits about liver damage and now these have been pulled as well. I have used excedrin for years. I don't shoot drugs and rarely drink yet my liver has damage. Could it be from all the acetaminophen that is in everything these days

I also have had bad headaches over the years and only Excedrin Migraine would help. I realized something was up when I couldn't find them ANYWHERE all of a sudden. Hopefully the issue will be resolved soon and they will be back on the shelves. In the meantime, Walgreen's brand works "ok" for me. Not as good, but it'll have to do I guess!

Dear Ann
I had been taking excedrine and other pain killer eversince I was in highschool due to toothache and sinus. 15 years ago I was diagnosed Auto inmune hepitites and lead me to the Chirrochis stage 4. When I took my friend to the Doctor they gave me a bloodtest since it was free, otherwise I wouldn't know i was sick and continue taking excedrine. There are no clear symtom earge you to see Doctor but If i didn't have the bloodtest that day I would have died in 5 years. The new medication call actigal or ursodial helped me to stabolise. Many friend in this Primal Bilium Chirrosis need transplant and many got it through organization. I haven't been taking drug or alchohol all my life. i used to get biopsy every few month, year and now checking blood and ultrasound every 6month. i am living in unemployable condition. So please think again for giving your daughter excedrine.

They are cleaning up their plant that distributed the broken and stay pills, and they want to clean up their good name and reputation they have had for years. Stopped having migraines in 2004 after using it for year, and only would have to eat a couple when I would feel one possibly coming on till present. (I'm normal - one bottle at a time kept out) I'm STILL upset with him and it's been months. I HAVE seen Extra Strengths online if you happen to run out. ALL the office stores seem to have the Extra Strengths AND they have the SAME ingredients as the Migraine. (I'm comparing from an empty bottle here). I wonder why they don't work the same. In any case, if you or ANYONE needs the EXTRA Strength, many Ofiice Supply stores now have it BUT - it's selling for $35 a bottle! :::sigh::: Best of luck everyone!

Kim, I'm not saying this to be a busy-body, I myself have scoliosis and take medicine for my back pain. But if you're taking Excedrin every day, I hope you're aware of the damage that the acetaminophen can do to your liver. It can cause the same, if not worse damage an being an alcoholic can do. You might want to consider switching to a cheap non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicine for every day use, like Advil or Ibuprofen. And even if one Dr.'s visit might cost a lot, it's going to save you a lot of medical bills in the end. I was on celebrex for a while and that worked wonders for me. You should ask the Doctor if they have samples of it, sometimes they'd be willing to give you month's worth at a time in order to help you out.

Thanks Alex V. for commenting on this story (and the other one about health benefits for other people). I would not have learned about this recall otherwise. I started using Excedrin Migraine too and it does work as well as prescription if taken in time for a migraine. And it's more affordable. To those with stomach and liver problems, when a body is given too much of any thing offensive to it, the liver reacts to combat it and if overworked, becomes damaged. If the body stops ingesting the offensive substance, the liver may be able to recover depending on the extent of the damage. It happened to me when I was in the hospital and given morphine and tylenol with codiene for several days. As soon as the doctors stopped the medication, my liver got better.

Good luck, and yes, bring back Excedrine Migraine !

I think this recall is sabotoge by the pharmacology producers because it is cheaper than perscription meds and works so well. One pill of Extra Strength Excedrin and within 30 minutes I am pain free for hours.

If you haven't found any yet - everywhere I look I am finding the Extra Strength Excedrin, though I want the migraine. SAME ingredients and amounts of them, but the ES doesn't work for me..weird! For the Extra Strengh, look online at: Staples, Office Depot, Acme Medical, ANY office supply store seems to have the Extra Strengh Excedrin. Some have the Allergy one. But no Migraine :( Good luck! (You wrote this on 2/16 so I hope you see this!!)

Try some of the smaller, individually owned gas stations if you are like me and absolutely need your Excedrin. NOTHING else helps my migraines and I can't take the prescription stuff since it's contraindicated with my other meds. Luckily for me, the Indian-owned gas station down the street still has the individually wrapped doses in stock.

Please put it back on the market cause the Vicodin that was prescribed is not touching my migraines and I have patient paper work to do and an exam in 3 days with a cluster migraine!

Not sure if I got some flu bug or if I got sick from taking extra strength migrane excedrin. That was the first time id ever taken that brand of medicine. I had a really bad headache and my co-worker had it on hand. So I took it. Felt better after about 2 hours. But when I got home and went to bed, I woke up and was so sick. I couldn't stand very well. I had diarrhea 13 times, and vomited 6 times. Later on after I slept more I woke up and felt pain all over and my temp was up to 101. My son was so scared for me he called my husband at work. Today I feel a little better but I again have a massive headache. I'm not sure if this is all from the medicine but if I get sick again going straight to the drs.

Much of the side effects people are experiencing is caffeIne withdrawal. Caffeine can be added to Tylenol, aspirin or a combination of both to compound your own version of Exedrin. The placebo effect is very powerful as is the nocebo effect. The thoughts that a drug could make a person sick actually causes the illness. All illness is caused by stress. Question your thinking about this, WALK and drink lots of water to ease caffeine withdrawal and stress.

Ran out of the good stuff this morning and went to buy a new bottle, found out about the recall from a store employee. I thought I was going to have a breakdown right there in the store. I'm sixteen and I suffer from frequent migraines/headaches. When I get them, I can't go to school, spend time with friends, watch TV, use the computer, or read a book. Even trying to sleep or eat hurts. Neurologists can't seem to find the cause, and since I'm under eighteen they're unwilling to prescribe medications without expensive testing that my insurance refuses to cover. Excedrin Migraine is the only thing that has ever helped, and now I'm all out. I hope this recall lifts soon - I'm literally buying half-empty bottles off my friends just so that I can make it through the days to come.

Wondering why some of you have only had an issue with the last two pills? Maybe if it was the entire bottle that gave you problems, bit not the LAST two pills. Migraines obviously can cause nausea and vommiting. I think you peole are silly and another example of mass paranoia. Just a though.

CVS Pharmacy has a headache relief tablet that I purchased instead, it seems to be working. And any pill can be hard on your stomach, especially if you have pre- existing conditions. If you have a stomach ulcer, acid reflux or IBS, you will be incredibly sensitive to these types of medications. So don't freak out and think you are dying, just call your physician and tell him the medications you are taking, he should already know what your pre-existing conditions are. I get migraines a lot and excedrin is the only thing that works "well" and "fast" but there are other solutions. And I am sure they are making a new batch right now. Relax.

I have taken it for years, in the white bottle, green bottle, econ size bottle and it has never made me throw up. And secondly if you get true migraines, all that dizziness, nausea, vomiting and vertigo are all associated with "THE MIGRAINE" duh...that is why it is not called a headache.

YES. Right on. And also, NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Advil can cause stomach irritation. Especially if taken too often, or on an empty stomach. So please people, don't make the same mistake I did and think it will be okay just these few times...STOMACH ULCER, and then you can't take them any more. And the liquid gels are the worst.

I do not think Novaris is really having problems with all of these over the counter items. The government could be very well involved in having them taken off of the market. You never hear of the phrase we do not know when and if they will be back on the market. Or, they could come back on the market 10 times more expensive as they originally were. They may be going the way of gas, oil and coffee...200% mark up!

It probably never will be. I called Novartis a month ago and was told that no date of it being back on the store shelves is set. I do believe that it totally interferred with the pharmacuetical companies profits and the makers of it were forced to take it off the market. I had to purchase my prescription meds and was only given a 15-day supply of 4 pills that retails at $100. It's highway robbery for sure.

It doesn't have asprin in it. only Acetaminophen and Caffeine. They work lots better than plan Acetaminophen. Can't understand why they took caplets of the shelfs. Hope they get it back soon. The Wal-Mart and Walgreens brands have exactly the same ingredients and in the exact same amounts as Excedrin and they're still available (wouldn't shock me greatly to learn that Wal--Mart might be behind the whole recall thing to begin with).
Here's the deal.... If Excedrin worked for you, those brands will too. And as far as the Excedrin Migrain, Excedrin Back and Body, and whatever other kinds of Excedrin they had, they're all exactly the same product... Same inredients, same quantitities, same everything... The only difference between them was the label. The idea was to help the customer find what they were looking for (if the customer for example has migraines, they will probably look for something that say's it helps migraines).
Whatever your issue, Migraines, Back Pain...whatever... Here's what you're looking for (taken from my excedrin bottle) Acetaminophen: 250mg per tablet, Aspirin: 250mg per tablet, and Caffine:65mg per tablet.
My issue is Migraines. And I'm in total agreement with everyone that will say that Excedrin is the only thing that worked. Until I looked at the label and found that Walgreens' and Wal-Marts brands have exactly the same syuff in them. 'Tried Walgreens and guess what... it works just like excedrin. I guess it would have to since it's the same thing... Who'da thunk... I've been paying full price for Excedrin for the last 30+ years and could have spent half as much buying a cheaper brand that does the same thing and just as well.

Excedrin migraine always worked the best for me. Has anyone ever tried alka seltzer for a migraine? Someone told me about that years ago and I thought they were crazy. It really works for me on certain migraines I get. Sometimes it works when my imitrex and/ or EM doesn't completely work. I guess it's the same principle as the BC powders. A quick burst of the buffered aspirin to get past the inflamed vessels. Try it, it works for me sometimes bit can't hurt.

After 1 1/2 months of a 24/7 migraine I recieved my first session of Botox shots for them. You must suffer from over 20 migraines per month and prove you have tried numerous medications that havent worked to get insurance to pay because this is a very expensive treatment. It has cut mine down to about 8 per month or less. Excedrine migraine works on these breakthrough migraines within 15minutes just as it always has!, Hope they are back on market soon because even this many per month is unbearable and I agree that if you could cut off your head to make the pain go away you would

The answer: Go to Google, type "Lincoln Nebraska newspaper," then go to the Lincoln Journal. Excedrin is made in 1 U.S. plant in Nebraska. Their article states not until "Mid year," most likely June, 2012. As further verification check Google for "Channel 4 news Michigan" and then type "Excedrin" on that site. They interviewed Novartis 6 months ago and were also told "Mid-year." The plant needs $120 million in upgrades. Until then, we all suffer

I heard from a Novartis employee that there were other painkillers stuck in the bottling machines. They use the same machines for prescription only painkillers such as percocet. They weren't properly cleaning the machines and some prescription drugs were getting mixed in with Excedrin products. (I wish I knew which stores they went to lol). The $120 Million upgrades the plant needs, as stated in a comment above, is so they can add a whole new bottling line to separate over the counter and prescription.

I get migraines. when it starts for me its so bad i cannot do anything but stay in bed with no lights and just lay there and puke till i fall asleep. the next day i will feel fine. this went on for 15 years and i dont get them all the time maybe 3 times a year. i tried excedrin migraine and had too take 4 of them but instead of pain so bad i puke and putting a pillow over my head so no light can get too my eyes it just felt like my head was going too blow up but i was fine with that. alot better. i could sleep off the migraine . only thing that ever worked for me is sleep.

I am so disappointed!! Excedrin migrane is the only medicine that works on my headaches! (that I get all the time) have suffered with migranes my whole life an this is the only product that works!! Hope their back on the shelfs soon. I've tried everything including prescription drugs and nothing works better!!!

Well ain't I a smart one! I have been looking for months for this excedrin as the only thin that took my head aches and any other pain away was Excedrin and in desperation haven't found it any where. I NEED this back on the shelf soon. I would take a combination of Excedrin and Excedrun tention and I can't find anything out there that even touch my pain..... :-(
