Residents employed in other towns would pay an additional .25 percent to Brecksville. But before city council decides, city officials are looking for some input from residents.
Mayor Jerry Hruby and city council are considering a new tax plan that would generate about $900,000 in additional revenue for Brecksville. Hruby has said it’s a proposal that wouldn’t raise property taxes on Brecksville residents. “We’re still accepting comments,” he said, adding that there’s no timetable associated with the plan. The fifth suspect in a botched plan to blow up a bridge on State Route 82 has decided to act as his own attorney when his trial begins next month. Joshua Stafford, 23, of Cleveland, recently rejected an unspecified plea bargain offered by federal prosecutors, according to the Plain Dealer. While the first four suspects have all been found guilty and sentenced, the Stafford case has been held up because of "psychiatric" issues. After Stafford made the decision to fire his public defenders, US District Judge David Dowd Jr. ordered federal public defender Timothy Ivey to serve as “advisory counsel” for Stafford, according to the Plain Dealer story. The Brecksville Charter Review Commission is considering 12 changes to the city's most important document. Most of the proposed changes (attached at the right) are housekeeping items, such as hiring practices. One of the measures looks at changing the city's spending limit — without city council approval — from $3,000 to $7,500. Another examines "some classifications of commercial zoning to be removed from mandatory referral and decisions relating to them from city council." The charter review process takes place every 10 years. The nine members, plus an alternate, are private citizens who are not currently involved in the government. Happy 90th birthday! From your friends in Brecksville. The city of Brecksville has launched a new program, “90+ Birthday Club,” recognizing seniors hitting the 90-year milestone. The city is sending out birthday cards during the month of the birthday. Tucked inside is an invitation for a free lunch at the Brecksville Human Services Center for the Feast ‘n’ Flick program. And the city offers transportation as well. “We want to reach as many 90+ seniors in our community so if you are, or know someone who is or will be 90 this year please call the Human Services office at 526-2499 to get your name on our list,” according to a recent news release. “The 90th Birthday Club is a fun thing to do,” said Ted Lux, the city’s director of human …

Voters in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District passed a 7.4-mill renewal levy on the ballot on Tuesday. The renewal levy — known on the ballot as Issue 12 — will continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12.66 per month, district Treasurer Rick Berdine said. The levy was first passed in 1988 and brings in about $4.8 million a year. Passage of the renewal would not raise taxes, but keep taxes at the current level. This renewal levy is being placed on the ballot as a continuing levy. “It represents 11 percent of our current operating budget,” Berdine recently told Brecksville Patch. “Not passing this …
