FIGHT with FINESSE!

Dear valued customers, business associates, friends, family, and neighbors,

Finesse Fine Jewelry is pleased to invite you to join in our efforts to help PREVENT BREAST CANCER. We are hosting a fundraiser to raise urgently needed dollars to bring the breast cancer vaccine, developed by Dr. Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic, to clinical trials and beyond. Our initial goal to raise $10,000 is quickly being met thanks to the generosity of many. We are hopeful that ultimately, we will raise much more before the campaign ends on December 31st. With your support, it can be done!

“FIGHT with FINESSE” by donating to help fund clinical trials and further research for the breast cancer vaccine developed by Dr. Vincent K. Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic.

Why we have chosen to support this cause

One day there will be no need for “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” We will look into the eyes of our children and grandchildren and tell them about a terrible disease called breast cancer that no longer exists. Imagine a world without breast cancer…and it’s within our reach!

We all know someone, either directly or indirectly, whose lives have been forever changed by breast cancer. At this very moment, there have been over 350,000 deaths worldwide from breast cancer. By the end of 2013, over one million lives will be lost to breast cancer across the globe. We are striving to help Dr. Tuohy continue his excellent work through our fundraising efforts, and by educating others about this novel way to control breast cancer.

A bit of history

A team of researchers led by Vincent K. Tuohy, PhD, in the Department of Immunology at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute, discovered what could become the first-ever vaccine to prevent breast cancer.

The study, published in 2010 in Nature Medicine, found that a single vaccination with a breast-specific protein prevented breast tumors from forming in mice, while also inhibiting the growth of already existing tumors.

Other attempts at breast cancer vaccines have targeted tumors after they have already developed. “Our vaccine represents a new approach,” Dr. Tuohy says. “We envision a future in which we control breast cancer by preventing it in the same way we prevent childhood infectious diseases – by targeted vaccination that directs a woman’s own immune system to protect her from developing breast cancer.”

Dr. Tuohy’s team is poised today to take this discovery from the lab to clinical trials. Philanthropic support will jump-start human trials, help the team improve the vaccine, and fund studies to develop similar vaccine strategies for other cancers.
