“Early in 2012, we were surprised at how low the number of weekly recipients was,” said Ted Lux, the director of human services in Brecksville. “Then, overnight, the number exploded.”

“I think the population of our residents are getting older,” said Linda DePompei, the program coordinator. “Baby boomers have reached this time in their lives. Also, family nucleus is no longer together. People move because of jobs, which could take them on the other side of the country.”

Brecksville-Broadview Heights Meals on Wheels is an independently operated, nonprofit organization that provides the service. About half the meals are served in Brecksville, the other half Broadview Heights.

The clients get two meals — lunch and dinner — Monday through Friday. Through donations, the program is able to subsidize each person by $1 per week. Total subsidies in 2012 amounted to $1,423.

Local caterer Tom Coyne prepares the food — at a fixed price for the past 17 years, “despite the rising costs of food,” said Lux.

About 45 volunteers drive their own cars and supply their own gasoline. DePompei said volunteers are “vital” to the success of the program.

“Who will look in on our parents to see if they have a nutritious meal?” she added. “That's the perfect scenario for the Meals-On-Wheels program.”

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to call the Brecksville Department of Human Services at 440-526-2499.

The program is funded largely by donations. Those interested in contributing are encouraged to send checks to “Meals on Wheels,” 2 Community Drive, Brecksville, OH, 44141.
