Viewfinder: On the Bridle Trail

A pair of horse aficionados and their horses find a good day for a ride.

Jazzy was getting impatient. Stomping her hooves and bobbing her head, she was speaking horse for “Let’s get going already.” Her owner, Kathy Cockfield, was strapping on the gear as fast as she could but she was handicapped by a nosy reporter/photographer.

Finally, with their saddles and reins in place and the trailers closed up, Cockfield and Jazzy were joined Wednesday for a jaunt on the Towpath trail near the Brecksville Station off Chippewa Creek Drive by Cynthia Greene and Whisper.

The lower heat and humidity meant fewer flies to torment Jazzy and Whisper, Cockfield said. The wet weather earlier this spring had prevented many opportunities to hit the trail, which might have made Jazzy, a Missouri fox trotter, even more eager than usual to hit the trails shortly before noon Wednesday. Curious and friendly, the horses readily approached a perfect stranger near their trailers. The horses weren’t bothered when a passing train from the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad blared its warning horn, either.

Jazzy and Whisper are best of friends, Cockfield and Greene said. That was evident as Jazzy waited for Whisper, Rocky Mountain horse, to catch up before setting off on the trail.

Greene was concerned that Whisper might balk at the unfamiliar Station Road Bridge, an old iron truss bridge that crosses the Cuyahoga River. Those worries quickly passed as the two horses and their riders calmly crossed the bridge and were on the trail.

Happy trails!
