Book Picks from Your Local Library for Feb. 4

Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for local readers.

Well, the groundhog thinks we have six more weeks of winter ahead of us—may as well stock up on your reading supplies in case that prediction turns out to be correct.

Here are some suggestions from the staff at the to help you out.

This week’s teen book recommendation was written by Teen Librarian Diane Wilson, and the adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn.

For adults:

A Duty to the Dead by Charles Todd
Meet Bess Crawford, not your typical upper-middle-class British woman. Strong-willed with a mind of her own, when WWI hits she decides to volunteer as a nurse—a journey that takes her into the darkest places of war. When she feels a personal connection to dying officer Arthur Graham she promises him she will deliver his dying message to his family. Bess finds his family but is baffled by their disinterested reaction and becomes determined to uncover the truth behind Arthur’s message no matter the cost. This is the first book in the Bess Crawford series.
 
Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea by Morgan Callan Rogers
In this debut from author Morgan Callan Rogers, she brings us into the shattered world of Florine Gilham. Florine had lead a happy childhood growing up in picturesque 1960s Maine—until her mother went missing. Left feeling broken and empty, we follow Florine as she and her father work to establish and survive their new life together without Mom. Will Florine find strength in the face of tragedy?

For teens:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
In Panem, winning the lottery changes the lives of 24 children each year, but not for the good. These girls and boys become contestants in The Hunger Games, a televised battle to the death. Recommended for grades 9 to 12.
