Book Picks from Your Local Library for Jan. 21

Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for local readers.

Are you planning to stop by the library this weekend?

Why not check out one of these suggestions from the staff at the ? (And if you’re looking to add to your personal library, there is a Friends of the Brecksville Library sale going on today.)

This week’s teen book recommendation was written by Teen Librarian Diane Wilson, and the adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn.

For adults:

The Rook by Daniel O’Malley

Myfanwy Thomas doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know how she wound up in a London Park in the middle of several corpses. She doesn’t know how a letter ended up in her hand, a letter with instructions from someone claiming to be her former self. What choice does she have but to follow the mysterious instructions? She soon discovers truths she never could have imagined like the fact that she is a Rook—a top-tiered agent for a secret supernatural-fighting organization called the Chequy—and she is on a traitor’s hit-list. Myfanwy must continue to figure out the puzzle of who she really is while running from her unknown assailants.

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman

This historical fiction novel is based on the tragic Jewish massacre of Masada and is told through the voices of four brave and mysterious women—the dovekeepers. While each woman reveals their unique background—one practices magic and medicine while another was born a girl but was raised a boy—we also learn that each still has many guarded secrets. What truths will seep out as the pressure of the approaching Roman armies grows stronger?

For teens:

Kendra by Coe Booth

Raised by her strict grandmother, 14-year-old Kendra dreams of being reunited with the mother who abandoned her. Reality turns out to be tougher than Kendra expects, and both mother and daughter realize they have a lot of growing up to do. Drama with boys, friends and family ensues. Recommended for grades 9 to 12.

Summaries may be based in part from information in the library's catalog.
