Frugal Family: Summer is Here and So Are the Summer Festivals

The first day of summer was this week.

June 21 was the first day of summer. The beginning of summer also marks the beginning of festival season in northeast Ohio. From art festivals to food festivals to community carnivals, there’s a festival happening just about every weekend all summer long -- and many of them charge no admission. Here are a few upcoming festivals in our area:

1. The City of Brecksville’s Bicentennial Home Days Weekend

Deal: According to the city of Brecksville's website, one of the many highlights of this four-day event will be a parade featuring the Budweiser Clydesdale horses. There will also be two fireworks displays, live music, activities for kids, games, a silent auction and a car show. Festival admission is free.

Good Until: According to the city's calendar, the festival is open from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. on June 23 and 24, and from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. on June 25 and 26.

2.  The Boston Mills Artfest

Deal: The Boston Mills Brandywine website has an entire section devoted to this event. According to the website, this fine art and craft show takes place over two separate weekends at Boston Mills Ski Resort. There will be a variety of artwork, including ceramics, paintings, furniture, sculpture and jewelry. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for those 60 and older and for students ages 13 to 21. Ages 12 and under are free, and parking is free.

Good Until: Artfest dates and times are from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. June 25 and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. June 26. It also runs from from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on July 1 and 2 and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on July 3.

3. Broadview Heights Home Days on the Green

Deal: According to the website for the Broadview Heights Parks and Recreation Department, this event will include carnival rides, live entertainment, a casino, fireworks, a dunk tank and give-aways. There will also be a 5-K and 1-mile walk on Sunday with a pancake breakfast immediately after. Festival admission is free.

Good Until: Festival dates are from July 7 through July 10.

4. Seven Hills Home Days

Deal: According to the city of Seven Hills' website, this event will include food, prizes, music and fireworks. July 31 is Kid's Day with clowns, magic and balloon fun. Admission is free.

Good Until: Festival dates are from July 29 through July 31.

 5. 29th annual Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival

Deal: According to the extensive website for this event, there will be a children's area and petting zoo, live music, an Irish coffee house, more than 50 vendors offering authentic Irish goods, foods and crafts and a Native Irish Dog Show. Admission is $10. Children under 10 are free, and parking is free.

Good Until: Festival dates are July 22 through 24. Hours are from 4:30 p.m. until midnight Friday, from 12 p.m. until midnight Saturday, and from 1 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
