Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for local readers.

This week’s adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn. The children’s book recommendation was written by public services assistant II, Karen Schmidt, of the children’s department.

The Secret Lives of Dresses by Erin McKean

Bland and uninspired, Dora’s life gets an unexpected shake-up when her grandmother, Mimi, falls ill. Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

Do you like a little mystery with your historical fiction? Give this post-WWI series a try. Maisie Dobbs is not your average working-class English woman. A maid turned Cambridge scholar turned WWI nurse, now a private investigator, Maisie is a true independent woman success story. Her first case appears to be a routine P.I. assignment: Christopher Davenham believes his wife may be meeting another man in her free time, but what Maisie finds is far from routine! This is the first book of the series.

For kids:

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

This book follows the journey of a little porcelain rabbit as he tumbles from his honored place in a little girl’s room to the bottom of the ocean and then from a garbage pile to a hobo’s bag. Along the way, Edward learns about love and loss. Recommended for ages 8 to 12.
