This Week's Book Picks from Your Local Library

Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for local readers.

It’s the weekend. If you’re hoping to spend some of your free time lost in a new book, the is a good place to stop. And the staff members there have some suggestions for readers of all ages.

This week’s adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn. The children’s book recommendation was written by public services assistant II, Karen Schmidt, of the children’s department.

Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin

An aging Alice Liddell reflects on her eventful life and the effect that Lewis Carroll’s iconic children’s story had on it. Based on the true story of Alice Liddell Hargreaves, the inspiration for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Melanie Benjamin weaves a historical fiction story that allows us to peer into a gripping but maybe not-so fairy tale life.

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch

Probationary Constable Peter Grant can speak with the dead, a skill that gives him a leg-up in solving crimes and catches the interest of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale. Together they must stop a supernatural crime spree as Peter is introduced to a criminal world filled with magic, ghosts, gods and goddesses.

For kids:

Ice Drift by Theodore Taylor

This book is like a blast of frosty air on a hot summer’s day. Two Inuit brothers are stranded on an ice floe drifting in the Arctic Ocean. They build an igloo, hunt for seals, and try to escape the attacks of a ferocious polar bear as they are swept further and further from shore.  Recommended for ages 8 to 12.
