Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for readers of all ages.

Learning to Swim by Sara J. Henry

Troy Chance’s life changes forever when she saves a young boy’s life after watching him fall into Lake Champlain off of a passing ferry. She is able to determine that the boy’s name is Paul, but quickly discovers he only speaks French. Expecting to reunite Paul with terrified and thankful parents, Troy is confused and appalled when she realizes no one is looking for him. Who is Paul? And where does he come from that the disappearance of a child doesn’t matter?

The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig

Everyone has heard of the Scarlet Pimpernel, but what about the Pink Carnation? Eloise Kelly, a Harvard Graduate student working on a dissertation about the famed spies, the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian, has uncovered a letter detailing the history of an even more elusive spy, the Pink Carnation. A great mix of historical fiction, suspense, and romance, this is the first title in a fun and clever series.

For teens:

Waiting for Normal by Leslie Conner

12-year-old Addie longs for a “normal” life with her ex-stepfather and two half-sisters while coping with the challenges of living in a trailer with a dysfunctional mother who’s often AWOL. Recommended for grades 5 to 7.
