Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for local readers.

If so, you’re in luck – the staff members at the have some suggestions for local readers. This week’s adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn. The children’s book recommendation was written by public services assistant II, Karen Schmidt, of the children’s department.

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh

Victoria Jones is finally being emancipated from the foster-care system. At 18 years old, it seems she’s been waiting for this day forever, but with no ties to anyone, she is forced to live homeless. Seeking shelter in a public park, Victoria decides to plant a garden and cultivate her unique gift of floriography—a Victorian era method of communicating emotions through flowers. Others start to take notice of how she can help others through her gift, but can Victoria help herself to reach happiness again?

The Snowman by Jo Nesbø

A woman disappears from her Oslo house in the middle of the night during the first snowfall of the season. Her young son Jonas wakes to find her gone, but a snowman has been mysteriously built in the yard and the scarf wrapped around its neck is his mother’s. Detective Harry Hole believes Jonas’s mother may be part of a pattern of women that all have gone missing during first snowfall. As Hole gets closer to an answer, the killer gets closer to Hole, using him as part of his murderous game.

Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

When his baby sister falls through the laundry room grate of his apartment building, 11-year-old Gregor follows her into the dark Underland beneath the city inhabited by rats, bats, and cockroaches and begins a dangerous adventure. Recommended for ages 10 to 12.
