This Week’s Book Picks from Your Local Library

Staff members at the Brecksville branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library have some suggestions for readers of all ages.

If you’re looking for some new reading material, you’re in luck.  

The staff at the is surrounded by books all the time, and they have some suggestions for local readers. This week’s adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn. The children’s book recommendation was written by public services assistant II, Karen Schmidt, of the children’s department.

The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton

Author Steve Hamilton just picked up his second Edgar Award —“honoring the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction and television published or produced”— with this captivating fictional mystery. Mute after surviving a traumatic experience as a young child, 18-year-old Michael is an expert at picking locks. His “gift” pulls him into a life of crime that he doesn’t want. A chance to escape what his life has become forces him to return home and face the cause of his silence.

The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown

When their mother is diagnosed with cancer, Rosalind, Bianca, and Cordelia (named by their Shakespearian expert father, who insists on communicating through Shakespearian verse) return home to help take care of her. Growing up together in this unique household, they’ve been running from each other ever since. Having to pull together as a family for their mother, each girl struggles with personal secrets and rediscovering their sisterhood.

For kids:

The Classic Fairy Tales by Iona and Peter Opie

In this anthology, folklorists Iona and Peter Opie recount original fairy tales in all their dark, convoluted, violent glory.  Each of the 24 stories is prefaced by a critical essay and is richly illustrated. Recommended for ages 9-12.
