You’re in luck. The staff members at the have some suggestions for readers of all ages.

This week’s adult recommendations were written by public services assistant Rachel Vaughn. The children’s book recommendation was written by public services assistant II, Karen Schmidt, of the children’s department.

WWI veteran Arlen Wagner can see death coming, but when he tries to warn his fellow train passengers that a fatal accident will happen on their trip, only Paul Brickhill believes him. When Henry Bright returns from the First World War, he must face the death of his wife and the responsibility of caring for their infant son. Plagued by flashbacks of his time in war and overwhelmed now by the destruction of his home, among other things, Henry begins being visited by an angel that appears in a surprising form. Following the angel’s orders, Henry packs up his son and livestock and departs on a journey toward a better life, all while being tracked down by his wife’s disturbed father who blames Henry for her death.

For kids:

The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin

This is a powerful Algonquin Indian folklore version of Cinderella. A young girl, scarred by fire, competes with her two beautiful older sisters for the love of the Invisible Being. Recommended for children ages 4 to 8.
