Brecksville Company Encourages People to Stay Active, Give Back

Learn more about MOVABLE.

Looking for a way to boost your New Year’s fitness resolution or for a creative way to give back?

Brecksville-based company MOVABLE might have the answer.

CEO Blake Squires said his company’s MOVband helps people track all of their movement, not just the steps people take. That means it measures eveything from dancing to jumping, and translates it into mileage, according to a fact sheet from the company. It’s worn on the wrist, just like a watch, and serves as a regular reminder to stay active.

Squires, who calls himself a serial entrepreneur, said his wife came up with the idea for the company. A parent and a teacher, she wanted him to address the obesity epidemic. MOVABLE has been used by a variety of school districts and companies since it started in Bath in 2011. MOVABLE relocated to its current location in Brecksville about a year ago.

“It’s been very positive,” he said of the reception to the company.

Squires said the key to the program is that it’s simple and low-cost. While the company often works with large groups, individuals can purchase a MOVband for about $30 and track their progress online.

Companies and other organizations can use that tracking function for fundraisers called MOVathons, according to a press release from the company. Purchase of the MOVband also gives participants access to a personal fundraising page, and allows them to set goals for sponsors.
