Getting Help With Your Taxes

Tax time is here again, so here are some helpful tax resources.

Tax time is upon us again, but you have a couple of extra days to procrastinate on your taxes this year. Tax day is April 18. Here are some resources to help you get your taxes done on time, and some of them are free.

1. City of Brecksville, Finance Department website.

Deal: The city website has links to valuable information for taxpayers, including the ABCs of Brecksville's city income tax and a link to the RITA website for electronic filing.

Deal: If you need tax forms, you can find most of them at the Brecksville library or at the IRS website. The IRS website also has a link to something called IRS Free File. This is an IRS program that allows you to use name brand software to calculate your taxes and file for free, if you made less than $58,000 in 2010.

Good until: Ongoing.

3. AARP

Deal: For more than 40 years, the AARP's Tax-Aide program has professionals who volunteer free tax assistance for low- to middle-income taxpayers, with special focus on those over 60. You can call the Parma-South branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library to make an appointment.

Good until: Ongoing.

4. Target, Parma Store

Deal: You may already know that TurboTax  is a tax preparation software for your computer. But did you know they have a free edition that you can download from the TurboTax website for simple tax returns? There are different versions of the software for those who need to itemize deductions, have small business, rental properties or even corporations, and the price ranges from free to $129.95 for the Business Edition. TurboTax is on sale for $10 off (excluding the Business Edition) at the Target Store, 6850 Ridge Road, Parma, Ohio.

Good until: Sale at Target good through Feb 26.

5. Local Tax Professional

Deal: When you deal with a local CPA, you may not get the cheapest price, but you should get excellent help. Having a professional accountant is a must for those with complex tax issues. Hubert & Hubert and are two such tax professionals in Brecksville.
