Brecksville's Bicentennial Celebration Not Done Yet

2011 was the official bicentennial year, but the festivities will continue into 2012.

may be done, but the celebration isn’t finished just yet.

Bicentennial Committee Co-chairmen Frank DeWolf and Don Faulhaber took a break from their busy year to give Brecksville Patch a quick glimpse at what’s yet to come:

  • Some members of the committee are working on a commemorative book, which DeWolf said should be ready for the 2012 Home Days celebration. The book will include a brief history of the city, with a concentration on the past 50 years, Faulhaber said. There will be lots of pictures, and the book will rely heavily on interesting local anecdotes. Previous books can be found on the committee’s website.
  • The , but there’s more to come. DeWolf said that area in front of will be turned into a memorial garden this spring, complete with plants, flagpoles, benches and placards with Brecksville history, giving people a place to “reflect.”
  • The will also be buried in the spring. The committee is still accepting ideas for what to place in the capsules. If you’d like to submit an idea, contact .
  • One of the items that is headed to the time capsule is the "." DeWolf said they’ve received some submissions from children commemorating the bicentennial, but there’s plenty of room for more. The submissions have ranged from pencil sketches to watercolors, he said.

During the past year, the committee aimed to host at least one meaningful event each month, DeWolf said. A look at their calendar shows that more than three dozen bicentennial-themed events and projects were held this year, either by the committee or other local groups. There were events for adults, kids and everyone in between, and events for large crowds and small groups.

“I think the year went very well,” Faulhaber said.

DeWolf agreed, noting that the community’s support was critical to the year’s success. That includes everyone from the volunteers on the committee to the city employees to the administration.

Donations are still being accepted and some merchandise is still available. Details can be found on the committee’s website. The committee plans to establish a scholarship for students, as well as to give gifts to the historical associations in Brecksville and Broadview Heights.
