Next World War II Program at the Human Services Center to be Held Wednesday

The program helps share the stories of that time period.

Once a month, the hosts a program on the stories of World War II.

Speakers cover all aspects of the time period, from what it was like for the different branches of the U.S. forces to the stories of civilians on both sides of the war. Ben Jeremiah, a Brecksville resident and one of the people in charge of the program, said they try to get all sides of the story.

“We try not to keep the same kind of thing going,” Jeremiah said.

The program began when Mayor Jerry N. Hruby asked Jeremiah and Homer Farr into his office, Jeremiah said. The mayor was interested in gathering the history of the war veterans. Jeremiah said the first meeting only had about six people in attendance – and by the end of the meeting, they had all shared their stories. The group decided to seek outside speakers and keep the program going. It will be four years at the end of this year, Jeremiah said.

The programs take place at 10:30 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. This week’s program will feature Al Siebert, who will discuss heroes, Farr said. He added that typically, the speaker is someone who will share his or her unique experience from the World War II time period and answer questions.

Jeremiah said this has varied from a woman who was a little girl living in Germany when her city was destroyed to a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, who discussed the challenges facing black men in the forces at that time.

The group often learns about potential speakers through word of mouth, and Farr said they are open to ideas.

The program includes refreshments, and anyone, regardless of the city they live in, is welcome to attend. Jeremiah added that the program is open to all ages.
