27 Dead in Connecticut School Shooting

Police in Newtown, Conn. were called to an elementary school at about 9:30 a.m. after a gunman allegedly opened fire at the school. The president spoke to the nation Friday afternoon.

Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire.
The Scene

Newtown Police were called to the school at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. They alerted Connecticut State Police and authorities began an active shooter investigation once they arrived at the school, according to Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance.

Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. He was allegedly armed with four guns and a high-powered assault rifle. Authorities said during a press conference that they have retrieved three weapons from the scene.

A parent interviewed on CBS News told the network that his 8-year-old daughter said she heard an argument and cursing over the school’s loudspeaker, apparently coming from the principal’s office. Her teacher then immediately locked the classroom door as a safety precaution. A fourth-grade student at Sandy Hook School told Connecticut’s Channel 7 that he and his classmates were “locked in a closet in the gym” to escape the gunman.

One mother of an 8-year-old girl at the school, Brenda Lebinski, told Patch that her daughter is safe thanks to one teacher's decision to move all kids into a closet when the gunman entered the building.

The Shooter and His Family

Police have not identified the shooter, but reports have said the suspect’s mother was a kindergarten teacher at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, CT, a town of about 28,000 people an hour outside Stamford where the shooting rampage took place.

Media reports initially identified the shooter as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza. However, Patch has learned that Lanza told friends his developmentally disabled brother, Adam Lanza, may have committed the crime.

Lanza’s friend, who declined to be identified, told Patch he spoke to Ryan Lanza as he was headed home from his job in Hoboken, NJ. Ryan Lanza wrote on his Facebook page that he is not the shooter.

“I’m on the bus now, it wasn’t me,” he wrote.

Lanza’s mother, Nancy, a kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook, is believed to be among the dead. According to reports, the shooting took place in her classroom. Eighteen children were killed at the scene, while two were taken to the hospital where they later died. The school’s principal, Dawn Hochsprung, also was among the six adults killed. Authorities said another adult at a different location was killed in the incident.

National Response

The shooting, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, has once again touched a nerve about the country’s gun violence.

During a press conference this afternoon, President Obama visibly wept, saying "we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action about this, regardless of the politics.”

The president also said “our hearts are broken for the parents and survivors, as well. For as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been lost."

On a side note, I'm off to purchase a Sig Sauer P522 today. It really is an impressive firearm. It fires NATO .223LR ammo ( which is abundant and cheap) and is rediculously accurate for a "pistol" or short rifle. At 18" long, it can fit nicely in a back-pack with plenty of room for extra clips and rounds. The version I am getting will have a nice laser site and I will add a pressure switch LED as well. Is p522 will be added to my collection that has never been used to kill a man, woman, or child. I also own rope, kitchen knives, multiple cars, and blunt instruments (baseball bats and the like) that have never been used to kill anyone.

20 kids are dead because they were in a concealed carry free zone. It makes our kids easy targets and that makes my blood boil. The ferry think you're trying to ban is a very thing that could save their lives
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 02:55 PM
I can just see you now jumping up and telling the criminal that he's not allowed to have that gun he has pointed at you. I'm sure you'll get through it will change his mind. I'm sure he'll go Wow, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to have a gun. I'll have to swing by the police department and turn it in. Because you know if you can own a gun, that neither can he. And that is exactly what you're saying Murphy

Alcohol kills more people than anything else combined. I'm sure you're kicking back right now drinking a few. But that's okay for you
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 03:01 PM
There's a fact. 25 people died last year from plastic bags. 90 percent were kids under the age of 4. I bet you have a few plastic bags in your house right now. And you're okay with that. The same thing applies here. You are so double standard

The cause and the solution are 1 in the same

Plastic bags have all sorts of uses from transporting items to storing items to keeping them safe from the elements. Guns, unfortunately, only kill. They serve no other purpose.

More guns does not make us safer. That's like saying more unprotected sex will result in less pregnancies.
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 04:42 PM
Well shooting is in the Olympics. Its recreational and competitive. You never hear of a sane person doing anything like that. What if he had run his car into a bunch if kids (god forbid) would it still be the cars fault? Do you want to ban cars now. Its the same thing. Giving the gov more power to tell people what they can do and what they can't do sounds like communism, but your probably for that too.
Earl Elevant December 21, 2012 at 04:47 PM
And restricting guns to legally-purchasing responsible gun buyers doesn't make us safer either.
The Omnipotent Sponge - Soak it up! December 21, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Cars transport you from point A to point B. Guns kill. The only reason for the existence of guns is to kill. Vehicles are there for transportation. Guns are there to cause death.
The Omnipotent Sponge - Soak it up! December 21, 2012 at 05:14 PM
Imagine the carnage and horror had the man walked into the school with a few dozen Ziploc baggies.
The Omnipotent Sponge - Soak it up! December 21, 2012 at 05:17 PM
No, 20 children were killed because a human being with weapons of mass destruction walked into a school and shot them. With a gun. With bullets. With a simple move of his finger, he ended lives. Guns kill. Guns are so good at killing that even toddlers can easily kill with nothing more than moving their finger less than 1 inch.

Actually (and quite factually): More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/health_effects/tobacco_related_mortality/
Garry Kanter December 21, 2012 at 05:46 PM
I think the focus should be on how to prevent these all-too-frequent mass murders. That would be *within* the framework of the 2nd amendment *and* reduce the number of babies slaughtered.
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 05:51 PM
Alright I give up. I really don't have anything else to bring to the table. I am almost sure that will see a gun ban or some kind of restrictions soon. I'm glad I got rid of all my guns.
MZ December 21, 2012 at 09:09 PM
So, I am convinced that all guns should be banned. Let's start tomorrow. What's the plan?
Garry Kanter December 21, 2012 at 09:22 PM
The plan? The grownups will begin discussing things. Gathering data, understanding the law, comparing alternatives. The others will stomp their feet, and hold their breath, 'cause that always worked before.
MZ December 21, 2012 at 09:36 PM
Ok Garry the grownup, start discussing things. Gather data, then what? It's ok, we all know you have no idea how to get what you want. You can hurl insults all day, it doesn't change the fact that you have no plan. Can't wait to see what Biden comes up with.
Garry Kanter December 21, 2012 at 09:51 PM
I did not insult anyone.
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 11:15 PM
Hey why you guys are at it, can you ban cellphones too. Everyone wants to text and drive. I think it's their soul purpose. I'm a truck driver. I see it all the time. I blame Verizon Wireless. How dare they make a schedule a product like that
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 11:32 PM
You guys are starting to sound like communist. You're not going to have that in this country. But you do have a shot at socialism though
Murphy-Solon December 21, 2012 at 11:50 PM
Schmidt, just to let you know, each one of those children had between 3 and 13 gunshot wounds in their little bodies. The gun used was capable of delivering 30 bullets in 20 seconds. You go tell the parents of these children that the gun is not a machine gun.
Confederate American December 21, 2012 at 11:53 PM
Can we move this conversation to another post. It's taking me forever to scroll down
MZ December 22, 2012 at 01:01 AM
Would the parents feel any less of a loss if it were one bullet? If the shooter had a shotgun and a five minute head start, would the results have been that much different? What if he only killed 15, or 10, would the outrage be any less? Go ahead and ban "machine guns" but don't be surprised if nothing is solved. Don't be surprised if killers continue to kill. Force must be met with force, or at least the threat of force. When you need the police (and God bless them) and seconds count they are five minutes away.
MZ December 22, 2012 at 01:05 AM
Garry, my bad. I didn't realize you we're referring to yourself when you typed about stomping feet and holding breath. It is now makes perfect sense to me. Sorry for the confusion but please continue to cry and stomp your feet to your hearts content.
Confederate American December 22, 2012 at 01:12 AM
I feel so bad for the parents
Confederate American December 22, 2012 at 02:09 AM
I might agree with some of what you say, but it would take a strong police force. If we where I live had a police chief like brimfield then yes. Sadly, I live in Kent.
Ted M December 22, 2012 at 02:24 AM
The AR used was registered to the mom BTW.

Would you prefer less than lethal ammo? http://www.firequest.com/index.html
