An Attempted Bridge Explosion and Controversial Teachers, Staff Union Negotiations: Brecksville’s 2012 Year in Review

Take a look at some of the biggest stories in Brecksville this year.

From a contentious round of contract negotiations to an attempt to blow up a well-known bridge, it was a year filled with news.

Here are five of Brecksville’s most-read, most-talked about and most-shared stories of 2012:

  • The Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board and the Brecksville-Broadview Heights teachers and staff unions spent most of the summer in a heated round of contract negotiations. One of the most-read stories was about . The unions offered to give up their right to strike if the board gave up its right to implement a contract. It didn’t have to come to that, though, and the parties reached an agreement later that month.
  • Another big story started in April, when the FBI arrested five men accused of trying to blow up the state Route 82 bridge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Four of the five men eventually pleaded guilty and were sentenced this fall. Media reports said the fifth man was still undergoing a psychiatric evaluation this fall.
  • Brecksville’s Giant Eagle closed in April, and the news that Marc’s would be replacing it created some conversation—in short, not everyone was pleased with the announcement. The new store is expected to open in February.
  • News of another new business in Brecksville created some excitement. The Burntwood Tavern opened up in the space left empty by Seared. The new restaurant officially opened its doors on Dec. 3.
  • And on a somber note, the community was saddened to learn that a young Brecksville man lost his life after hitting the Red Brick Store building in July. Scott Lawrence Wayne was not under the influence at the time of his accident.
