Brecksville Police Blotter: A Fake Name, a Fraudulent Credit Card and a Mishap at the Gas Station

The following information was supplied by the Brecksville Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following incidents were reported by the from Sept. 15 to Sept. 24. The information was compiled by police reports.

Speeding driver gives officers a fake name
An officer pulled over a speeding car on Interstate 77 at 3:49 a.m. on Sept. 24. The driver had little information for the officer. He said that his ID had been stolen a couple of weeks earlier, that he had just moved and didn’t know his new address, and that he didn’t know his social security number—and the car was borrowed.

The name—and address he eventually used—he gave the officer existed, but the photo didn’t match the driver. The driver stood by the name he gave through questioning, at least until his wallet fell out of his pants leg and officers found some credit cards. The 28-year-old Lakewood man was charged with falsification, failure to reinstate and speeding. He had a misdemeanor warrant in Euclid and was picked up by that department.

Speeding turns into paraphernalia charges
An officer pulled over a car without rear lights for speeding on Interstate 77 at 8:51 p.m. on Sept. 19. The officer quickly learned that the driver, a 20-year-old Cleveland man, was driving under a suspended license. The driver gave the police permission to search the car, saying there was nothing illegal in it. The officer found a purse with a crack pipe inside, which one of the passengers claimed. The passenger, a 49-year-old Cleveland woman, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

The driver was charged with driving under suspension and with not having rear illumination. The other passengers were released.

Credit card fraud stopped
A Brecksville man stopped by the station on Sept. 17 to report identity theft. He said someone had tried to open a credit card using his information. The man had noticed when checking his online banking and managed to get the card cancelled before any charges were made.

Driver forgets to replace nozzle, spills gas
A Brecksville woman accidentally drove away without putting the gas nozzle back in the pump at the on Sept. 15. The hose separated from the top of the pump and about four gallons of gas ran out before the pump was turned off. The woman said she had been trying to pump gas, but nothing was coming out. When she went to leave, she forgot the nozzle was in her car. The spill was cleaned up and there was no damage to the pump.
