Brecksville Police Blotter: Underage Consumption, Property Damage and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

The following information was supplied by the Brecksville Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following incidents were reported by the Brecksville Police Department between July 26 and 31. The information was compiled by police reports.

Underage consumption and open container

At 10:43 a.m. on July 31, an officer spotted a car driving down Interstate 77, and an “armed and dangerous” alert for the car’s registered owner came up, along with a larceny warrant from South Carolina. The driver, a 20-year-old Elyria man, was aware of the warrant and cooperative. There were two passengers in the car, a 54-year-old El Paso, Texas man and a 17-year-old Elyria woman. When the woman gave her name and birthday, no information came up on file. The driver said the woman was his girlfriend, and gave police a different name and birthday than she had given.

The woman was eventually identified—the name and birth date were different than either had said. There was a missing persons report on her from South Carolina, but she is considered “of age” in that state and was released.

Two open beer cans were found in the car, and both men were charged with open container. The driver was also charged with underage consumption and possession. South Carolina did not have him extradited for the warrant.

Property damage

On July 28, police talked to a seasonal Service Department employee who accidentally broke the window of a passing car when trimming weeds on Brecksville Road. The weed trimmer hit a rock, which soared into the rear window of a passing pick-up truck. The driver returned to report the damage to the employee.

Possession of drug paraphernalia

An officer pulled a car over at 10:49 a.m. on July 26 on Hilton Drive after watching it drive so slowly down Brecksville Road that cars were backing up behind it. The driver, a 50-year-old Cleveland man, said he was looking for their next job, but couldn’t say where that was. Both he and the passenger, a 30-year-old Cleveland man, had suspended licenses and active warrants out for their arrest. Police found an open container of liquor in the car, along with a burnt spoon with cotton and residue in it—often a sign of drug abuse, the report noted—nine unused syringes and one syringe that appeared to be used. The driver said the owner of the truck, who was not present, was diabetic and the needles were his.

The driver was charged with driving under suspension and slow speed, and the passenger was charged with possession of narcotic equipment and drug paraphernalia.
