Police Remind Residents to Lock Car Doors in Light of Recent Thefts

The thefts have been from unlocked cars.

Brecksville has seen an increase in thefts from cars in the past few weeks, but residents can take a few easy steps to discourage thieves from making their vehicle a target, said Sgt. Dan Jereb.

The recent thefts have been “crimes of opportunity,” Jereb said. The cars that have been entered were unlocked, and there were no signs of forcible entry.

“They’re not forcing their way into them,” he said.

Jereb said they’re not sure yet if it’s a coincidence or the same individual or individuals, but the department is looking into it. The crimes have happened in different parts of town, and there doesn’t appear to be a pattern, he said.

While the is investigating the recent thefts, here are a few suggestions Jereb had to keep your car from being a target:

  • Lock the doors.
  • Be aware of where your car is parked, and park it inside if possible.
  • Don’t leave belongings out in the open. If they must stay in the car, put them in a glove box or the trunk.
