Update: Pipe Bomb in Brecksville Was Found, Forgotten During the Summer

The explosive was rediscovered and detonated last week.

A was actually found during the summer, said assistant law director Sergio DiGeronimo.

The explosive had been found in one of the Service Department’s trucks—the truck had been used by the guardrail crew, a seasonal group, during the summer and has been parked ever since. The pipe was discovered on Tuesday by a member of the Service Department who was taking the truck to be cleaned, DiGeronimo said.

After called in the Southwest Enforcement Bureau's Bomb Squad to take care of the explosive, they reached out to the seasonal workers who had been on the guardrail crew. One said he remembered finding it sometime in July, but he didn’t remember where he was or who else was there. The pipe got stored in the truck and forgotten.

DiGeronimo said the pipe was about 7 inches long and covered in duct tape. There was also a visible fuse sticking out of it.

And it was real. When the bomb squad detonated the pipe, it left a crater about six inches deep, DiGeronimo said.

No charges have been filed.
