Brecksville City Council Appoints New Police Chief

Family and friends filled the council chambers to see Richard E. Mannarino be sworn in.

Brecksville City Council last night named Richard E. Mannarino as the city’s new police chief.

Mannarino, a longtime Brecksville police officer, is taking the place of Dennis A. Kancler, . Captain Michael J. Carlin, who has served as interim chief during the past few months, was also a candidate for chief.

Mayor Jerry N. Hruby noted during Tuesday's City Council meeting that either officer would have made a good chief; he mentioned during the committee meetings earlier that evening that the officers’ scores on their exams were extremely close.

Hruby said that Mannarino has taken on a lot of additional responsibilities in the department over the years, and that he is sure Mannarino will find a way to make a good department even better.

The full room gave Mannarino a standing ovation after he took his oath of office.

“It’s a very special evening for me,” Mannarino said outside of the meeting. Next month will be the 32nd anniversary of his being sworn in as a Brecksville police officer, he added, and he’s pleased to have been able to stay so long.

In other council news:

Becki Burlingham, director of purchasing, told council members during the committee meetings about the city’s first online vehicle auction, which will begin next Wednesday.

The city held an online auction in the fall, Burlingham said, and it went so well that they decided to try one with vehicles, as well. Before, the city just opened up those kinds of items to public bid, but the online system is less laborious, Burlingham said.

The auction, which will include vehicles like retired police cars and pick-up trucks, will be open from April 13 to April 20.
