Brecksville City Council Honors Local Eagle Scout, Hires New Part-Time Police Officer

Council honored a local Eagle Scout before addressing city issues.

addressed everyday issues around the city at Tuesday’s meeting including Community Center roof damage and hiring of staff.

Before these issues, council recognized Eagle Scout Daniel Sasala of Troop 652 for outstanding achievement and the earning of 34 merit badges.

“We really think well of this family and appreciate the fact that their son has done so well in the years that he has been active in scouting,” said Mayor Jerry N. Hruby.

As for city issues, one decision affecting Brecksville residents centered on garbage. At the committee meeting preceding the 8 p.m. council meeting, Director of Public Services Ron Weidig discussed his research on automated trash pickup. An option for pickup is a truck with a mechanical arm grabbing large trash bins off streets instead of human workers.

“We just do it more efficiently,” Hruby said. “We don’t need to go automated. We’re automated enough the way we do it.”

Council members agreed with Hruby to keep the current trash pickup system for cost and convenience reasons, saying one trash bin wouldn’t settle well with residents. Also, trucks with employees would still have to make a second round to pick up extra garbage.

Other items addressed in the committee meeting and approved in the full council meeting:

  • Chad Smith was rehired as a part-time police officer and jailer. After a leave to attend the police academy in Cleveland, he will return to work for Brecksville. The mayor mentioned his outstanding work, and the city’s need for an extra officer, which led to approval of his hire.
  • Council approved a more than $14,000 project to repair storm damage on the roof and for computers ruined during that storm. Insurance will reimburse the city just a little more than $10,000 of the cost.
  • An analysis of a Chippewa Creek floodplain was approved, along with the motion to have City Engineer Gerald Wise speak with homeowners along the floodplain. "Debris stockpiles" stacked along the football and baseball fields pose a threat for flood problems.
