Brecksville Considering a New Waterpark

City council OK's study to examine the idea.

Clarification: Council is looking to "enclose the current outdoor pool in conjunction with the current indoor facility," before making any other decisions, said council president Greg Skaljac.

Brecksville City Council took a first step toward getting a new waterpark.

But first, council wants to enclose the current outdoor pool in conjunction with the current indoor facility.

Mayor Jerry Hruby told Brecksville Patch last year that a new/indoor pool or waterpark that could be used “year-round” was just an idea.

On Tuesday, council OK’d a measure that would allow the Moody Nolan firm to prepare and present initial designs for $16,000 to "provide us with some concepts and options to enclose the current outdoor pool in conjunction with the current indoor facility," said council president Greg Skaljac.

"However, even if this was something that was to be done in the future, it would only be considered if/when a new outdoor water park/family aquatic center was constructed at Blossom first," he said.

"We are not looking to enclose the current outdoor pool in lieu of constructing a larger replacement outdoor facility at Blossom."

Hruby said the suggested pool improvement and expansion was suggested to the Recreation Commission as the department considered the Blossom Hill Master Plan.

“It became more of an interesting concept as we move forward to replace the roof above the Natatorium of the Community Center,” Hruby said. “(It) appears logical to determine what if any revisions in the roof would be required if the outdoor leisure pool area was expanded and enclosed for year round use.

“Also, as we discuss an added outdoor water feature at Blossom Hill, we should know the probability, features and cost to revise and enclose the leisure pool for year round use.”

Council also approved the design firm to “select products and prepare bid specifications” for the replacement of the roof at the Community Center.

Council is expected to consider the pool proposal at its next building and grounds committee meeting.

Last year, nearly 100 votes were cast in our poll on the issue. Most people—41 percent—were in favor of a new outdoor pool at Blossom Hill. Just 12 percent wanted a water park built at the Community Center. And 25 percent of people opted for neither option, saying the city has other priorities to focus on first.
