Brecksville Plans to Pursue Study of Chippewa Creek

The area has flooded this year during the heavy rains.

The city is taking residents’ complaints about flooding seriously.

During , members again discussed the flooding this year along Chippewa Creek.

The topic came up in August when to share their concerns and again during the . At that meeting, Mayor Jerry N. Hruby told council that he had been meeting with representatives from nearby cities and from the to discuss how to manage the flooding in the area.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Hruby told council that he planned to ask the Army Corps of Engineers to study the waterway. The city has video of the creek at rest and when it’s running with floodwater, he said, as well as a summary of damages. In the past, the Army Corps had looked into a study of the Cuyahoga River, but the area in question didn’t affect residents or the city, Hruby said, so the city declined.

It’s not a new problem, Hruby said, but he believes that the creek has widened and that debris has built up over the years. He added that the city would need permission before it can go in and clear anything out.

“We’re doing what we should be doing,” he said during the committee meeting.

Hruby said he plans to meet with the Army Corps in October. He will also meet with city officials in Broadview Heights and North Royalton next month.
