City Continues Looking for Solution to Chippewa Creek Flooding

The Army Corps of Engineers visited in October.

The rain this year has been hard on Brecksville’s rivers, and the city has been working to find ways to stem the frequent flooding along Chippewa Creek.

City officials have been meeting with representatives from Broadview Heights, North Royalton and the , and the Army Corps of Engineers visited the city in October. City Engineer Gerald Wise gave a brief overview of the visit to members of .

Wise said the trip took the corps through some areas of erosion, like the area near and , and to Broadview Heights. It gave them an idea of the damage that had taken place over the years and of the homes near the waterway. Mayor Jerry N. Hruby had said at meeting that the city needs permission before it can take any type of action in the creek.

Wise said in an email in early October that the city was requesting help from the corps. But as of Tuesday’s meeting, Wise said the city had not officially heard back. He did say he thinks the corps might be interested in reevaluating the city’s flood map.

The mayor has also recently met with representatives of the Army Corps, the National Weather Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, FEMA, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency. Hruby said earlier in October that the meeting was a chance to share information on what has happened in the creek in the past and to learn about what programs are out there to help.
