City Council Approves New Building at Blossom, Discusses Flooding

New and ongoing improvements to the city were the focus of much of Tuesday's council meeting.

City Council discussed a variety of updates and improvements residents can expect to see around Brecksville during  at . Here’s a quick look at some of them:

  • Council approved a resolution to build an addition on the boiler building at Blossom for the Service Department. Mayor Jerry N. Hruby said the building would not affect the master plan that’s in the works for the facilities; it would just serve as a maintenance area for the Service Department employees at that location. He estimated the cost to be between $300,000 and $400,000. Director of Public Services Ron Weidig said there are currently two buildings at the grounds used for the same purpose that are in bad shape and will be demolished. Dimit Architects will do the design.
  • Hruby took some time to talk about meetings he’s had with officials from local cities and the about the recent flooding. He said the city officials have discussed how developments, like the new Giant Eagle being built in Broadview Heights, can affect the shared waterways. They plan to meet again next month. Hruby said he’d like to see something built along Interstate 77 to help slow the flow of water to Chippewa Creek. Hruby said he’s also been talking to the Metroparks about problem areas.
  • The Service Department is continuing concrete repairs around the city as part of the summer’s road repairs projects—and the city is already taking steps for next year’s road repairs. City Engineer Gerald Wise said during the committee meetings that they will be examining the conditions on Greystone Parkway soon—there are low areas in the road and they want to find out why. Weidig said the examination should be done in time to plan the 2012 road projects.
  • Council approved a $4,000 purchase requisition for the design of the city’s 2012 flower program. Weidig said the city used to have an employee who ordered the plants and did some of the work, but now the outside companies do that, too.
  • The and the will both receive updated signs.
  • The plans for the were approved by council, after a recommendation from the planning commission. Weidig said after the meeting that he hopes to begin the digging for the project on Monday.
