City Looks to Break Ground on Horticulture Building Next Year

Mayor Jerry Hruby said that a new, $800,000 horticulture building is expected to begin next year, as part of the Stadium Drive master plan.

As part of the Stadium Drive master plan, the city is looking to build a new horticulture building next year.

The city’s new salt storage bin was recently completed, now city officials are turning their attentions to other projects, including space for the Brecksville Horticulture Department.

“We’ve never had one,” Mayor Jerry Hruby recently told Lakewood Patch. “Right now, we’re using an old Army barracks.”

Hruby said that project would cost approximately $800,000.

“We’re big on beautification in Brecksville,” he said. “We plant hundreds of trees each year. We like green-space, we want to create green-space. We like to beautify our properties.”

However, the Stadium Drive proposal didn’t come without controversy.

The mayor said the issues arose when the city bought a piece of land in the center of town.

“Some people asked why we’d put that here and not somewhere else,” he said. “We came through that as a community very well.”

The money for the new building will be included in the 2014 budget, Hruby added.
