Current Council President Not Running for Re-Election

Larry J. Potla said he's enjoyed the years he's spent on council.

After spending more than 10 years as a member of Brecksville’s City Council, current President Larry J. Potla has decided not to run for re-election.

Potla, who has been the council’s president for the last six years, said he knew that travel and other issues would keep him away from a number of future meetings, which he didn’t think was fair.

“I really believe if you’re going to be on council, you should be there,” he said.

Potla said he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the council in 1996 and has been a member nearly ever since, having taken a couple of years off after the end of the appointment. His term expires at the end of this year.

Potla said he’s enjoyed his time on council and as president, although it was difficult because of all the issues with flooding in the city. He added that he’s been glad to give direction to some of the newer members.

Potla’s seat is one of four available in the Nov. 8 election. The other three incumbents whose terms are expiring—Gerald F. Broski, Louis N. Carouse Jr. and Michael T. Harwood—all filed petitions to run. There are two other candidates in the race, as well: Laura C. Redinger and Constance Ritter.
