Brecksville Citizens for Transparent Politics files their petition with the Brecksville Finance Director

Brecksville Citizens for Transparent Politics collect enough signatures to have their petition considered for inclusion on the Nov 6, 2012 ballot pending the approval of the Board of Elections.

Last week the non-partisan group Brecksville Citizens for Transparent Politics filed our Citizens Petition with the Finance Director of the City of Brecksville.  We knocked on doors, stood at the library, the rec center and anywhere else we thought we could engage our citizenry.  We collected our signatures without regard to political party or ideological stance.  The community response to our petition was great!  We are part of the Move to Amend movement (movetoamend.org), which seeks to get a 28th amendment ratified, which will simply state:  "corporations are not people" and "money is not equivalent to speech”.

In the coming months, if our petition succeeds in getting on the Nov 6th ballot, we will be trying to get the word out to all Brecksville citizens that our democracy is in peril.  A democracy cannot survive for long when it can be bought by the highest unknown bidders.  When our public representatives no longer represent their constituents but rather represent those who hand them the most money, it’s time to take matters into our own hands.  That is what we’re trying to do with our grass roots movement.

I would also like to thank all those residents who answered their door when we came knocking or who stopped to talk with us outside the various locations around town.  You gave us a chance to explain our mission. In these busy times it’s very generous for you to spend some time hearing us out.

For all those parents who have children, wouldn’t this be a great local issue in which to involve them?  It would give you a chance to teach them about our constitutional process, about the fragility of democracy and the need to be involved.

We can use all the help we can get from those Brecksville citizens who are willing to get involved with our movement.  Please let me know if you are interested in helping you can email me at:  brecksville@movetoamend.org.
