Big Drop in Enrollment Projected in Brecksville-Broadview Heights Schools

During the past 10 years, enrollment in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Schools has dropped by nearly 500 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

It’s a trend that’s expected to continue. 

By the 2022-23 school year, there could be a drop of 605 students in the district.

That’s according to an enrollment study recently released by the board of education.

The data was collected using a number of sources, including a steady downward trend of live births. 

For example, there was a peak in 1999 at 403 births in the school district, compared to the lowest number — 342 — in 2010.

The study also examines historical enrollment, non-public school enrollment, community demographics, and housing information to predict student enrollment at each grade level over the coming decade.

The total number of students for the 2012-13 school year is 4,173 students.

“Information from this report will be used by the Board of Education and administration as they work with members of the public to develop the district's new five year strategic vision and future master plan,” according to a statement posted on the district’s web site.

The total population in the school district is 26,065. However, the population is projected to decrease by 611 children — or 2 percent.

The report also examined the number of building permits issued for single-family dwellings. In Brecksville, that number peaked in 2001 at 65.

By 2011, that number had dropped to six.
