Central School Principal Spending the Day on the Roof

Christopher Hartland told students he’d set up camp on top of the school if they brought in 2,011 food items.

Principal Christopher Hartland isn’t spending the last day before winter break in his office.

Instead, Hartland is spending the day camped out on ’s roof.

Hartland challenged the fourth and fifth graders in his school to collect 2,011 food items for the , promising that if they did, he’d spend an entire school day on the roof.

They went above the mark, collecting nearly 2,400 items, he said.

Hartland’s tent was set up on a part of the roof near a couple of open hall windows in the school. He said the cold wasn’t really getting to him, and that people had been stopping by to bring hot chocolate and a warm lunch.

“It’s gone quite well so far,” he said, shortly after noon.

What a fun idea! I enjoyed this story...glad to hear the kids exceeded the challenge.

I thought it was a pretty cool way to motivate the kids—and I'm glad for Mr. Hartland's sake that the rain stopped today! I was starting to wonder earlier this week.

I watched Mr.Hartland having fun on the roof all day because it was right outside of my 5th grade classroom! (Mrs.Paskert's) Now that i am moving on to middle school i am going to miss the school, the teachers, and Mr. Hartland of coarse! Bye Central!

It did look like he was having fun when I stopped by, Julia! I'm sure there will be plenty of cool activities at the middle school, too. Good luck!
