Five Things You Should Know About the Proposed School Levy

Here are some of the fine points of the levy, slated to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Correction: The combined levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home approximately $192 each year, according to the district.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights School Board got the ball rolling on Monday night to place a combined renewal levy measure on the Nov. 5 ballot.

We thought we outline some of the finer points, should the board authorize sending the measure to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections on Thursday.

  1. It’s a renewal. That means that homeowners’ taxes aren’t expected to go up.
  2. According to the resolution, the 6.3-mill levy is necessary “for the purpose of current operating expenses, and the acquisition, construction, enlargement, renovation, and financing of general, ongoing permanent improvements for the school district.”
  3. 5.3 mills (approximately $5.3 million) are for operations and 1 mill (approximately $1 million) is for permanent improvements, according to treasurer Rick Berdine.
  4. The combined levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home approximately $192 each year.
  5. The renewal levy was first approved by voters in the district in 2004, and extended in 2009.
