Issue 12: Brecksville-Broadview Heights Schools 7.4-Mill Renewal Levy

The renewal levy would continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12.66 per month.

Residents in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District will vote on a 7.4-mill renewal levy on the ballot on the May 7 ballot.

The renewal levy would continue to cost the owner of a $100,000 home $12.66 per month, district Treasurer Rick Berdine said.

“This is not a tax increase as this levy has been in place for 25 years,” he said. “It has been renewed previously four times.

The levy was first passed in 1988 and brings in about $4.8 million a year. Passage of the renewal would not raise taxes, but keep taxes at the current level.

This renewal levy is being placed on the ballot as a continuing levy.

“It represents 11 percent of our current operating budget,” said Berdine. “Not passing this renewal levy to continue providing the same level of resources to the district would be devastating to the day-to-day operations of every school in our district.”

If passed, taxpayers will continue to pay that millage in the future, but the levy would not be placed on the ballot again. Currently, this levy comes up for renewal every five years and will expire at the end of 2013.

“It will allow the district to continue the high quality education it provides to its students,” Berdine said.

Residents voted to turn another renewal levy into a continuing levy in 2011.
