Locally Made Video Encourages Students to Think About the Future

The video is part of a lesson plan that helps students to think like entrepreneurs.

The world is changing fast – and Dathan Cole and John Klipfell want today’s students to know how to keep up.

Cole and Klipfell are two of the driving forces behind the , which helps students think about how to adapt in today’s changing world. It includes a science component and an economics one. Cole is an economics teacher at , and Klipfell is the executive director of Entrepreneurial Engagement Ohio.

During this past summer, the two were working on some plans for the year, Cole said, and they revisited a well-known video they had used in the past called “Shift Happens.” The video focuses on how information and technology has changed rapidly, and Cole said they used to show it to make an impression on the pace of change on people at the start of the program. But they thought the most recent version was getting a bit outdated.

So they decided to make their own for Entrepreneurial Engagement Ohio.

It’s inspired by the original video, Cole said, but it has their own economics and entrepreneurial twist, incorporating the main elements of the Scholarship of Entrepreneurial Engagement program. They had help from Patrick Gallagher, who also works in the district. The video addresses the pace of change in today’s careers – how many jobs teenagers can expect to have, what skills they’ll need to adapt and how the market is becoming more global.

The video has since been presented to local high school students and, most recently, the .

“This will wake up our students and all of us,” Klipfell told the board. He said they hope to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and encourage students to be lifelong learners.

Klipfell said they’re planning to show the video to as many people as possible – and they’re hoping it becomes the next big national thing.
