Majority of Patch Readers Want School Board, Unions to Sign “The Pledge”

On Tuesday, we the latest move in the school district's contentious contract negotiations. The vast majority of our readers voted in favor of the idea as of Thursday afternoon.

The pledge, which was , asks the Brecksville-Broadview Heights school board to give up its right to impose a contract. In exchange, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association and Organization of Support Staff would give up their right to strike. This agreement would last until new contracts were signed.

In our non-scientific poll, 74 percent of respondents voted that the pledge is a good idea and that they want both sides to sign it. Twenty-two percent of respondents disagreed, voting that the board should not give up its right to impose a contract. No one voted that the teachers and staff shouldn’t give up their right to strike.

There has been no news on the proposal since Monday’s press conference. As of 6 p.m. on Monday, Board President David Tryon said the board would take the proposal “under advisement.” He could not be reached later this week for an update.
