Markowitz Wins National Merit Scholarship Honor

Brecksville-Broadview Heights student wins $2,500 prize for academic excellence

Senior of Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School won a National Merit Scholarship for $2,500 on Wednesday and is among 8,300 students nationwide to receive the honor.

Markowitz was selected from a field of 15,000 finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, and he can use the scholarship at any regionally accredited college or university.

Markowitz’s likely field of study is physics, according a National Merit Scholarship Corporation press release.

A committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors made the selections based on academic performance, community activity, an essay, two standardized tests and a recommendation from a high school official.

The program screened some 1.5 million students with the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Some 16,000 were named semifinalists. Other semifinalists from the high school included .
