Middle School Students Learn to "Bee the Difference"

The students have been practicing random acts of kindness this spring.

School Counselor Kirstin D’Alessandro felt like she was spending too much time focusing on the negative, constantly talking to students at about not bullying. She wanted to turn the conversation into a positive and remind students to do good for others, so she created “Bee the Difference!” cards.

D’Alessandro passed the cards out to all the students in the middle school this spring, encouraging them to do random acts of kindness for others, leaving the card behind. Each card has a number and includes a website where the person who was on the receiving end of the good deed can submit it online. And then, D’Alessandro hopes, they’ll pass the card along by doing a good deed of their own.

“Help your parents. Help your neighbors. Help your community,” D’Alessandro said.

D’Alessandro provided Brecksville Patch with some examples people have submitted. So far, people have been recording a variety of different good deeds. Some have been as simple as setting the table or helping clean up around the house. Others have sneakily washed a car, mowed a lawn without being asked and bought dinner for a family. One boss even gave someone a paid day off work.

So, if you spot one of these cards around town (there’s a photo to the right), make sure to pass it on!
