Renewal Levy Likely on the Ballot in August

The renewal levy expires at the end of the year.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education is planning to put a 6.8-mill renewal levy on the ballot in August.

The board discussed the upcoming renewal levy during at the . The levy, which was originally approved in 1997, expires at the end of 2012. It comes up for renewal every three years.

β€œIt is critical to keep the operations where they are right now,” said chief financial officer/treasurer Karen E. Obratil.

It’s a dual-purpose levy, which means it raises money for both operating expenses, such as utilities or staff salaries, and for permanent improvement projects, like district renovations. More than $4.4 million goes toward operating expenses each year, and about $770,000 goes toward improvements.

The levy costs homeowners about $158 a year per $100,000 of home value.

To get the renewal levy on the Aug. 7 ballot, the board will have to approve a resolution at its next meeting in March and a second one in April. The filing deadline is May 9.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights voters have been supportive of renewal levies, but the board is not taking anything for granted, said President David Tryon. If this renewal were to fail, the board could try again in November.

More information on the renewal levy is available on the district's website.
